Volkanovski Frustrated: UFC Title Shot Delay Fuels Evloev Fight Demand

Volkanovski Frustrated: UFC Title Shot Delay Fuels Evloev Fight Demand

March 24, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Alexander Volkanovski’s reign as featherweight champion has been marked by a willingness to face all comers, but the recent maneuvering by the UFC regarding his next title defense is causing frustration for the champion. While Volkanovski reclaimed the belt at UFC 314 against Diego Lopes, the subsequent discussions about potential opponents, and the promotion’s seeming willingness to entertain alternatives to the most deserving challenger, have left him questioning the UFC’s motives.

The situation centers around Movsar Evloev, who has quietly built an impressive 10-0 record within the UFC, most recently defeating Lerone Murphy in the main event of UFC London. Evloev’s dominant performances have positioned him as the clear frontrunner for a title shot, a fact Volkanovski acknowledges. However, the UFC’s flirtation with a rematch against Lopes, despite Volkanovski already having defeated him, and the brief consideration of Jean Silva as a potential contender, has raised eyebrows.

“I’m incredibly confident I beat all these guys – Jean Silva, Lerone Murphy, Movsar Evloev, all of them,” Volkanovski stated in a recent video on his YouTube channel. “I seem at fighting the best for one, that’s always gonna come first, then if we talk legacy, who do we want? I want the undefeated guy that’s beaten all of the other contenders, all the top guys, because I understand that beating him is gonna look very good on my resume.”

Volkanovski’s comments suggest a desire to solidify his legacy by defeating the most formidable opponent available. He views Evloev as that opponent, recognizing the undefeated Russian’s impressive run and the quality of his victories. The champion’s frustration stems from the perception that the UFC is prioritizing marketability or other factors over competitive merit.

The initial plan, as revealed by Evloev, involved a potential face-off inside the Octagon following UFC 314 had Lopes emerged victorious. Evloev was reportedly instructed to be prepared for this scenario, suggesting the UFC anticipated a different outcome. When Volkanovski instead reclaimed the title, the plan was abruptly altered, leaving Evloev sidelined.

“Yeah, I was kind of surprised when they didn’t let me in, because before they tell me like: ‘Be ready,’” Evloev said. “Maybe they expected Lopez to win. That’s why they tell me to be ready. And Volk wins and they change their minds. But I don’t care, generally.”

This perceived shift in plans has fueled speculation that the UFC was actively hoping for a Lopes victory, potentially to capitalize on a new champion with a different narrative. While Volkanovski doesn’t dwell on the UFC’s motivations, he is increasingly vocal about the need to face the most deserving challenger.

The situation is further complicated by Dana White’s comments following UFC London, where he left the door open to a potential title shot for Jean Silva, despite Silva’s loss to Lopes and Evloev’s clear claim to the next opportunity. This ambiguity has only intensified Volkanovski’s frustration.

“Again, I’ll fight whoever the UFC says but how many times am I gonna fight guys that are undeserving when there’s a clear number one guy? I did that enough, I’m in a situation now where I’m gonna be like, ‘come on, this is getting ridiculous’ now you’re making me look bad by not fighting the number one guy,” Volkanovski explained.

Evloev’s manager has indicated that the UFC was pleased with his performance at UFC London, suggesting the promotion recognizes his credentials. However, whether that recognition will translate into a title shot remains to be seen. The UFC’s history suggests a willingness to prioritize storylines and potential revenue over strict adherence to rankings, a reality Volkanovski is acutely aware of.

Diego Lopes, meanwhile, is open to a trilogy with Volkanovski should he win the rematch at UFC 325, but also expressed interest in a rematch with Evloev or a fight against Lerone Murphy. “If the UFC wants one more fight with Volk, I’ll take one more fight with Volk, but I want a rematch with Movsar too. Lerone Murphy is okay, too,” Lopes stated.

Volkanovski himself acknowledges that he is prepared to face any opponent the UFC puts in front of him, but he clearly believes Evloev is the most logical and compelling choice. The coming weeks will determine whether the UFC prioritizes competitive integrity or continues to explore alternative paths, potentially at the expense of both the champion’s legacy and the credibility of the featherweight division.

The stakes are high, not only for Volkanovski and Evloev, but for the future direction of the 145-pound weight class. A decision to bypass Evloev would send a clear message that rankings and merit are secondary considerations, potentially alienating fans and undermining the competitive landscape.
