Volkanovski: Holloway Is Tsarukyan’s Biggest UFC Threat, Not Topuria

Volkanovski: Holloway Is Tsarukyan’s Biggest UFC Threat, Not Topuria

March 7, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The question of Arman Tsarukyan’s readiness for a UFC title shot is gaining traction, but former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski believes the lightweight contender’s path to a championship isn’t as straightforward as some might think. Even as Ilia Topuria currently reigns at 155 pounds, and many anticipate a rematch with Max Holloway, Volkanovski sees a different, potentially more challenging matchup for Tsarukyan.

Volkanovski, speaking on his YouTube channel, suggested that Max Holloway presents the most significant test for Tsarukyan. “I think Max Holloway is Arman’s toughest challenge,” Volkanovski stated. “Max Holloway’s cardio, takedown defense is incredible, he’s always going to be scrambling to the top. He’s going to make you perform there. Then, even though Arman’s very fit, now you’ve got a crazy puzzle in front of you on the feet when you can’t rely on your takedown.”

This assessment comes as Tsarukyan’s recent behavior outside the Octagon has raised concerns. A series of incidents, including a brawl at RAF, a headbutt on Dan Hooker, and previously, punching a fan at UFC 300, have led some to question his maturity and whether he can be trusted with the responsibility of a title run. Dana White, yet, appeared unconcerned by the RAF incident, suggesting it wouldn’t necessarily derail Tsarukyan’s championship aspirations.

Despite White’s relatively lenient stance, Volkanovski’s comments highlight a growing narrative surrounding Tsarukyan’s temperament. The question isn’t just about his skills inside the cage, but whether his “loose cannon” tendencies, as some have described them, make him a viable candidate to represent the UFC as champion. The incidents have undeniably halted the momentum of a fighter many considered the second-best lightweight in the division.

Topuria himself has downplayed the threat posed by Tsarukyan, seemingly dismissing him as an easy opponent. Volkanovski, however, disagrees with that assessment, believing Holloway’s unique skillset – particularly his relentless cardio and scrambling ability – would pose a significant problem for the Armenian fighter. Holloway’s ability to consistently pressure opponents and maintain a high pace could negate Tsarukyan’s grappling advantage, forcing him into a striking battle where Holloway excels.

The potential for a Holloway-Topuria rematch looms large, especially after Holloway’s recent BMF title win against Charles Oliveira at UFC 326. Volkanovski accurately predicted Holloway’s victory, further solidifying his analytical prowess. A win for Holloway would almost certainly position him as the next challenger for Topuria’s lightweight title, potentially bypassing Tsarukyan altogether.

The situation is further complicated by Topuria’s own hints at a possible move up to the 170-pound welterweight division. If Topuria does pursue a new weight class, it would open up the lightweight title picture considerably, potentially creating an opportunity for Tsarukyan – provided he can address the concerns surrounding his behavior.

Volkanovski’s analysis underscores the importance of a well-rounded skillset in the modern UFC. While Tsarukyan is undoubtedly a talented grappler, Holloway’s ability to dictate the pace and control the striking exchanges could prove to be a decisive factor. The former featherweight champion’s insight suggests that Tsarukyan’s path to a title shot may not be as clear-cut as some believe, and that a matchup with Holloway could be a far more challenging hurdle than anticipated.

As the lightweight division continues to evolve, the question of who will challenge Topuria remains open. While Tsarukyan remains a strong contender, his recent actions and Volkanovski’s assessment suggest that he may need to prove himself further before earning a shot at the title. The UFC’s decision will likely hinge on a combination of competitive merit and the ability to represent the organization responsibly.
