Wales 2026 World Cup: Salt Lake City Base & Qualifying Path

Wales 2026 World Cup: Salt Lake City Base & Qualifying Path

March 8, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The Wales national team is preparing for a crucial stretch of World Cup qualifying matches, with a potential base in the United States already taking shape should they successfully navigate the play-offs. Negotiations are underway for Salt Lake City, Utah, to serve as the team’s training headquarters if Wales reach the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is actively working to secure facilities in Salt Lake City, a location that is home to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Real Salt Lake. Anthony Pulis, assistant manager at Real Salt Lake and son of former Premier League manager Tony Pulis, has been advising the FAW on suitable options within the United States, leveraging his local knowledge and connections.

Wales’ immediate focus, however, remains on securing their place in the tournament. Their qualifying campaign resumes on Thursday, March 26 with a play-off semi-final against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff. A victory there will set up a final showdown against either Italy or Northern Ireland on Tuesday, March 31, also in Cardiff, for a coveted spot in the finals.

Should Wales overcome these hurdles, their group stage schedule is already known. They are slated to face co-hosts Canada in Toronto on Friday, June 12, followed by a match against Switzerland in Los Angeles on Thursday, June 18, and a final group stage contest against Qatar in Seattle on Wednesday, June 24. The tournament, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, will present a unique logistical challenge for all participating nations.

The potential selection of Salt Lake City as a base reflects a strategic decision by the FAW to prioritize acclimatization and training conditions. Utah’s altitude and climate offer a potentially advantageous environment for the Welsh squad, allowing them to adjust to North American conditions before and during the tournament. The presence of Anthony Pulis within the Real Salt Lake organization provides a valuable local resource, streamlining the logistical process and ensuring a smooth transition for the team.

Wales’ journey to the 2026 World Cup has been far from straightforward. Finishing second in Group J during qualifying, with a record of five wins, one draw, and two losses against Belgium, North Macedonia, Kazakhstan, and Liechtenstein, meant they were unable to automatically qualify for the tournament. This necessitated a play-off route, adding an extra layer of pressure and complexity to their aspirations.

The upcoming matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and potentially Italy or Northern Ireland, represent a critical juncture for Welsh football. Manager Craig Bellamy, who never had the opportunity to play in a World Cup himself, is hoping to lead his nation to their first appearance on the world stage since 1958. The stakes are undeniably high, not only for the current squad but also for the future of Welsh football.

The expanded format of the 2026 World Cup, featuring 48 teams – up from the traditional 32 – has increased the opportunities for nations to qualify. However, it has also intensified the competition, making each qualifying match even more significant. Wales’ play-off campaign is a testament to the challenges and rewards of navigating this new landscape.

Beyond the on-field battles, the logistical preparations for the tournament are well underway. The selection of host cities and training bases is a crucial component of ensuring a successful World Cup experience for all participating teams. Salt Lake City’s potential role as a home away from home for Wales underscores the importance of these preparations and the collaborative efforts between national football associations and host nation organizations.

The draw has already determined Wales’ potential path through the group stage, should they qualify. Group B, featuring Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar, presents a challenging but not insurmountable obstacle. Each opponent offers a unique set of tactical and technical challenges, requiring Bellamy and his coaching staff to develop a comprehensive game plan.

The match against Canada, the co-host nation, is likely to be a particularly high-profile affair, played in front of a passionate home crowd in Toronto. Similarly, the game against Switzerland in Los Angeles will pit Wales against a traditionally strong European side. The final group stage match against Qatar in Seattle will be a crucial encounter, potentially determining Wales’ fate in the tournament.

As Wales prepares for these pivotal matches, the focus remains firmly on the task at hand: securing qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The potential base in Salt Lake City provides a glimpse of the logistical planning already underway, but the ultimate success of the campaign will depend on the performance of the players on the pitch and their ability to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
