Wales Women: Wilkinson to Continue Goalkeeper Rotation in World Cup Qualifying

Wales Women: Wilkinson to Continue Goalkeeper Rotation in World Cup Qualifying

March 2, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Wales manager Rhian Wilkinson is maintaining a flexible approach to her goalkeeping selection as her team prepares to begin their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The team’s first challenge in the qualifying process comes on Tuesday, with a match against the Czech Republic in Uherske Hradiste.

Wilkinson has consistently rotated between Olivia Clark and Safia Middleton-Patel in goal since taking the helm as Wales’ head coach, and she intends to continue this practice. The decision, she explained, stems from a desire to foster a supportive environment rather than a fiercely competitive one, while too allowing both goalkeepers the opportunity to prove their worth.

“Both of them have performed for Wales but I don’t feel either of them really grabbed the jersey yet and so I try not to make it [so] that it’s a combative environment,” Wilkinson stated. “They know before they come in which games they’re going to be playing, so I try to share them that you have just got to perform in your game. If they can do that consistently, they’ll grab the number one, but I do not feel one of them has taken that number one role yet.”

The approach reflects a broader managerial philosophy focused on player development and creating a positive team dynamic. While the pursuit of a starting position is inherent in professional sports, Wilkinson is prioritizing a situation where both goalkeepers feel valued and motivated to perform at their best when given the opportunity.

Clark, 24, who plays for Leicester City, has accumulated more experience at both the club and international levels compared to the 21-year-old Middleton-Patel of Manchester United. However, Wilkinson’s rotation policy ensures that Middleton-Patel receives consistent playing time and the chance to build her confidence on the international stage. Poppy Soper, of Rugby Borough, is also part of the Wales squad, providing further depth in the goalkeeping position, though Clark and Middleton-Patel have been the primary focus of Wilkinson’s rotation strategy over the past two years.

Middleton-Patel was the goalkeeper in Wales’ most recent friendly match, a victory over Switzerland in December. Clark, meanwhile, started in the other fixture during that camp, against South Korea. This pattern of alternating starts demonstrates Wilkinson’s commitment to giving both players regular opportunities to showcase their abilities.

Wilkinson’s own career provides a valuable perspective on the demands of international competition. A veteran of over 180 appearances for the Canadian national team, she earned Olympic bronze medals in 2012 and 2016. She transitioned into coaching after a successful playing career that saw her feature for clubs in Canada, Norway, and the United States, including the Boston Breakers and Portland Thorns. Her experience as a player informs her coaching decisions, particularly her emphasis on creating a supportive and competitive environment for her players.

Prior to taking the helm of the Wales national team, Wilkinson served as an assistant coach for both the Canadian national team and England, as well as head coach of Portland Thorns, leading them to the 2022 NWSL Championship. This diverse coaching background has equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of the game and the nuances of managing a team at the highest level.

The upcoming match against the Czech Republic marks the beginning of a crucial qualifying campaign for Wales. The 2027 Women’s World Cup, to be held in Brazil, represents a significant opportunity for the team to make its mark on the international stage. Wilkinson’s strategic approach to goalkeeping, combined with her overall leadership, will be key to Wales’ success as they navigate the challenges of World Cup qualification.

The decision to rotate goalkeepers isn’t without potential drawbacks. A settled number one can provide a sense of stability and confidence to the defense. However, Wilkinson clearly believes that the benefits of keeping both Clark and Middleton-Patel engaged and motivated outweigh the risks. The coming months will reveal whether her strategy proves successful in securing Wales a place at the 2027 World Cup.

The match against the Czech Republic will be broadcast live on BBC Two Wales and iPlayer from 17:15 GMT, with radio commentary available on BBC Sounds via BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru. Text commentary and match highlights will be available on the BBC Sport website and app.
