Warriors to Negotiate Player Swap with Broncos for Mitchell Barnett Release

Warriors to Negotiate Player Swap with Broncos for Mitchell Barnett Release

March 13, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Auckland – The Brisbane Broncos are set to secure the services of Warriors’ prop Mitchell Barnett, but the deal hinges on the Warriors receiving suitable compensation. Barnett, who requested a release from his contract on personal grounds, has agreed to a two-year deal with the Broncos, with a mutual option for a third year in 2029.

The move comes after Barnett expressed a desire to return to Australia for family reasons, specifically to be closer to his son and facilitate medical treatment. He had previously played under Broncos coach Michael Maguire during Maguire’s tenure with Novel South Wales, a connection believed to have influenced his decision. While Parramatta and Manly likewise expressed interest, Barnett ultimately prioritized a move to Brisbane.

However, the Warriors are not prepared to let Barnett depart without receiving a player in return. “Everyone is aware of that. We are waiting to understand what that could look like,” Warriors CEO Cameron George told AAP. George declined to name specific players, stating, “I am not going to name names. We are in talks with Brisbane and waiting to hear back from them.”

Reports indicate the Warriors are exploring the possibility of acquiring young Broncos talent as part of the deal. Specifically, the name of NZ-born Broncos teenager Antonio Verhoeve, an outside back currently training with the NRL squad, has surfaced as a potential target. The Warriors are seeking a player who can contribute to the team’s future, ensuring they are not disadvantaged by the loss of a key forward.

Barnett’s arrival in Brisbane is intended to fill the void left by Payne Haas’s recent departure to South Sydney. The Broncos view the 31-year-old as a ready-made replacement, recognizing his value in a market where quality front-rowers are increasingly scarce. Barnett has established himself as one of the competition’s premier props since joining the Warriors from Newcastle at the end of 2022.

The Warriors have emphasized Barnett’s well-being throughout the process, prioritizing his family’s needs. “The most key thing since Mitch and I had the conversation was that it is all about him and his family,” George explained. “The decision from then on was for Mitch to make and not for us.”

Despite prioritizing Barnett’s personal circumstances, the Warriors are firm in their expectation of receiving adequate compensation. George added, “Equally we are waiting to understand what the transaction looks like but I am extremely happy for Mitch and his family.” The club understands the importance of maintaining a competitive roster and will carefully evaluate any potential trade to ensure it aligns with their long-term goals.

The situation highlights the complexities of player movement in the NRL, where personal considerations often intersect with the competitive needs of clubs. Barnett’s desire to be closer to family has prompted a move that requires careful negotiation between the Warriors and the Broncos. The outcome will not only determine Barnett’s future but also potentially shape the direction of both franchises in the coming seasons.

The Warriors’ stance underscores their growing strength as a negotiating force within the league. They are no longer willing to simply allow key players to depart without securing valuable assets in return. This approach reflects a commitment to building a sustainable and competitive team capable of challenging for premierships.

As talks continue between the two clubs, the NRL community awaits a resolution that satisfies all parties involved. The Broncos are eager to add Barnett’s experience and physicality to their forward pack, while the Warriors are determined to secure a player who can contribute to their future success. The coming days will be crucial in determining the final outcome of this high-profile player transaction.
