Wembanyama Leads Spurs to Historic February & Championship Contention

Wembanyama Leads Spurs to Historic February & Championship Contention

March 5, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

PHILADELPHIA — The San Antonio Spurs are playing with a confidence and consistency rarely seen from a team that missed the playoffs for six consecutive seasons. Fresh off a near month-long road trip and a dominant 131-91 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night, the Spurs are firmly in the championship conversation, a testament to the arrival of a generational talent and a team that simply refuses to be bored with success.

The victory, their largest since February 2018, capped an 8-1 stretch during their annual Rodeo Road Trip, necessitated by the San Antonio Stock Demonstrate, and Rodeo. It also extended their impressive record to 12-1 since February 1st – the best in the NBA. The 76ers became the first team in NBA history to suffer three home losses by 40 or more points in a single season.

Leading the charge, of course, is Victor Wembanyama. But the Spurs’ recent surge isn’t solely a one-man show. Rookie Dylan Harper contributed 22 points, fueled by 18 three-pointers as a team, showcasing a well-rounded offensive attack. Wembanyama, despite taking a career-low five shots, finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and a remarkable six blocks – five of those coming in the first half. That first-half block total matched the entire rest of the NBA combined for the season.

Wembanyama’s impact, however, extends beyond the stat sheet. He recently returned from a trip to Alaska, where he witnessed the aurora borealis. “The show I had was, I think a historic, maybe a once-in-a-lifetime event even for northern lights chasers,” Wembanyama said. “It was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in my life. Ranks No. 1.” The experience, he explained, put things into perspective, a sentiment echoed by those who have watched his rapid ascent in the league.

“It’s just something that looks so out of place,” Wembanyama said of the northern lights, a feeling that perhaps mirrors the Spurs’ unexpected rise in the Western Conference. After years of rebuilding, the team now sits at 44-17, second in the West, just three games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The February sweep was historic. The Spurs became the first team in NBA history to travel undefeated in a month while scoring at least 110 points in every game. The accolades followed swiftly. Harper was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month, coach Mitch Johnson earned Coach of the Month honors, and Wembanyama was recognized as the NBA’s Player of the Month, averaging 22.5 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks.

The success hasn’t gone to their heads, according to Johnson. “When we’ve committed to just not getting bored with our success at times and staying with what’s working, we’ve had some really good stretches,” he said. The team’s ability to maintain focus and execution, even with a comfortable lead, was evident against the 76ers, who were thoroughly outmatched.

The Spurs’ road trip, while lengthy, proved to be a valuable bonding experience. Harper, experiencing his first taste of the NBA’s grueling travel schedule, jokingly lamented the need for a new arena in San Antonio. “We need that new arena,” he said. Johnson, amused by the rookie’s comment, noted, “He’s been here for two seconds. He doesn’t have a vote yet.”

The planned downtown arena received voter approval in November 2026, paving the way for a $311 million investment in venue taxes. The Spurs are committing at least $500 million to the project, with plans to cover any cost overruns. The prospect of a new home is exciting, but for now, the Spurs are focused on building momentum as they return to San Antonio.

The team’s return to their home court on Thursday against the Detroit Pistons marks the start of a six-game homestand. Wembanyama is eager to get back to a normal routine. “Sleeping in my own bed,” he said. “Eating my chef’s food. Getting back into the normal routine, the normal life.”

The Spurs’ resurgence has been a welcome surprise for fans and analysts alike. As Tyrese Maxey of the 76ers put it, “TV don’t do him justice,” referring to Wembanyama’s impact on the game. The Spurs, once languishing in the lottery, are now legitimate contenders, a testament to their talent, coaching, and unwavering commitment to excellence. They’ve gone from missing the playoffs for six straight seasons to being among the NBA’s elite, and the journey is far from over.
