WSU Track & Field: Cougars Dominate MPSF Championships Day 1
Reno, Nevada – Washington State University’s track and field team made a resounding statement on the opening day of the MPSF Championships, dominating the men’s 5000m and securing a victory in the women’s Distance Medley Relay (DMR). The Cougars showcased impressive depth and speed, setting the stage for a competitive remainder of the championships.
Kipchoge Leads Cougar Sweep in 5000m
Solomon Kipchoge claimed the top spot in the men’s 5000m, finishing with a time of 13 minutes and 46.43 seconds. The race was a tightly contested affair, particularly between Kipchoge and his teammate, Evans Kurui, who finished just a second behind in 13 minutes and 47.61 seconds. Kipchoge strategically positioned himself behind Kurui for much of the race before unleashing a decisive push in the final laps to secure the win.
The Cougars’ strength in the event was undeniable, as they swept the top five positions. Josphat Meli secured third place with a strong time of 14 minutes and 15.70 seconds, while senior Muhammed Ahmed and junior Kutoven Stevens rounded out the top five, clocking in at 14 minutes and 18 seconds respectively. This impressive showing highlights the depth and talent within the Washington State distance program.
Cougars Triumph in Women’s DMR
The Washington State women’s DMR team delivered a commanding performance, winning the event with a time of 11 minutes and 31.83 seconds – a full five seconds ahead of their nearest competitor. The relay team, comprised of Mercy Biwott, Lashanna Graham, Daphne Evenson, and Rosemary Longisa, executed a flawless race, demonstrating both individual speed and seamless teamwork.
Mercy Biwott led off the race with a strong 1200m leg, establishing a competitive position within the pack. Lashanna Graham maintained momentum with a solid 400m split, keeping the Cougars in contention. Daphne Evenson’s 800m leg kept the race competitive, setting the stage for Rosemary Longisa to deliver a remarkable anchor leg. Longisa, starting in seventh place, surged to the front, securing the victory for Washington State.
Personal Best and Solid Performances
In the women’s 5000m, Caroline Jepkorir achieved a personal best time of 17 minutes and 0.48 seconds, finishing in fourth place. Kylah Madariaga closely followed, finishing fifth with a time of 17 minutes and 0.54 seconds – just six-hundredths of a second behind her teammate. These performances demonstrate the continued improvement and dedication of the Cougar women’s distance runners.
The men’s DMR team also contributed to the Cougar’s success, finishing in third place with a time of 10 minutes and 5.69 seconds. The team consisted of the Verges brothers, Kade Brownell, and Ku Stevens.
