The 39-year-old is currently participating in exhibition games with the Oisix Niigata Swan Palace against Taiwan’s CTBC Flying Lions, a series that represents a poignant chapter in a career spanning Japan and Taiwan.

Yang, a name synonymous with Taiwanese baseball heroics, particularly his MVP performance at the 2013 World Baseball Classic, is using this time to prepare for what he acknowledges is likely his final season. He’s not limiting himself to the outfield, a position he’s excelled in for over a decade, earning four Golden Glove awards. Instead, he’s actively working to regain his proficiency at infield, specifically at shortstop – the position he was originally drafted as in 2005 by the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.

“This year, I desire to train both in the infield and outfield,” Yang revealed, as reported by the Liberty Times. “I proactively discussed this with the team. Here’s my final challenge.”

The decision to revisit his roots comes as Yang contemplates life after playing. “I’ve been watching Guo Hong-zhi and Wang Jian-min’s YouTube channels,” Yang said, reflecting on the players who guided him during his earlier successes. “Their insights are excellent, and it’s a part of my learning process.”

The team has undergone significant roster changes in the offseason, bolstering both their pitching and hitting lineups.
