Zulte Waregem Fires Coach Vandenbroeck, Names Colpaert as Replacement

Zulte Waregem has parted ways with head coach Sven Vandenbroeck following a fourth consecutive defeat, this time a 1-0 loss to Standard on Sunday. The decision, announced Monday, marks the end of Vandenbroeck’s tenure with the club, despite guiding them to promotion to the Belgian Jupiler Pro League last season.

Stepping in to fill the void is Steve Colpaert, who served as an assistant coach to Vandenbroeck since January. The 39-year-old Colpaert will become the first head coach of his career, tasked with steering Zulte Waregem through the final two matches of the regular season.

The club currently sits 12th in the Jupiler Pro League standings with 29 points, a precarious position as the season nears its conclusion. Only one point separates Zulte Waregem from Cercle Bruges, who occupy the 13th spot – the threshold for entering the relegation play-offs. The teams finishing 13th through 16th will compete in a play-off to determine which team(s) will be relegated.

Vandenbroeck, 46, took the helm at Zulte Waregem in the summer of 2024, following previous managerial roles with Lierse, Wydad AC, and AS FAR Rabat, among others. His time with the club spanned 62 matches across all competitions. He successfully led the team to a championship in the Challenger Pro League, securing their return to the top flight.

Although, recent form has been deeply concerning. Zulte Waregem has struggled to discover the back of the net and secure positive results, winning only two of their last 17 league matches. Sunday’s defeat to Standard proved to be the final straw for the club’s leadership.

Colpaert brings a wealth of technical experience to the role, despite lacking prior experience as a head coach. He has held various technical positions at Club Bruges, Westerlo, and Dender. The club statement emphasized that Colpaert, in collaboration with the existing coaching staff, will focus on preparing the players for the remaining regular season matches and achieving the club’s sporting objectives.

“Together with the current technical staff, he will prepare the players for the two remaining matches in the regular competition, in which the club wants to achieve its sporting objectives,” the club stated in a press release.

Zulte Waregem’s situation highlights the intense pressure faced by teams battling to avoid relegation in the Jupiler Pro League.
