Zverev Joins Federer, Nadal & Djokovic: Indian Wells Semifinal Run & Sinner Clash

Zverev Joins Federer, Nadal & Djokovic: Indian Wells Semifinal Run & Sinner Clash

March 13, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Indian Wells, CA – Alexander Zverev has etched his name alongside tennis royalty, becoming only the fifth player in ATP history to reach the semi-finals of all nine Masters 1000 tournaments. The March 12th victory over Arthur Fils, Thursday, 6-2, 6-3, at the BNP Paribas Open secured his place in the exclusive club previously occupied by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.

“It’s particularly special to be one of five players in history to ever do it,” Zverev said, acknowledging the significance of the achievement. “For sure, yeah, it’s something that I’m very proud of.”

The Thursday’s quarterfinal win wasn’t just about joining an elite group; it marked Zverev’s first appearance in the Indian Wells semi-finals. He had previously struggled at the event, including a disappointing second-round exit last year against Tallon Griekspoor. This year’s performance signals a clear resurgence for the German, who has seven Masters 1000 titles to his name.

However, a Grand Slam title continues to elude Zverev, despite reaching three major finals. The Indian Wells tournament presents a significant opportunity to add another prestigious title to his resume, and potentially climb in the rankings. Currently ranked fourth, Zverev faces a formidable challenge in the semi-finals: a matchup against World No. 2 Jannik Sinner.

The head-to-head record doesn’t favor Zverev, who has lost his last five encounters against Sinner. A win over Sinner would not only propel him into the Indian Wells final but as well see him overtake Novak Djokovic and reclaim the No. 3 spot in the PIF ATP Rankings. Sinner advanced to the semi-finals with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over American Learner Tien in just 66 minutes.

Sinner is also seeking his first title of 2026, having experienced semi-final and quarter-final exits at the Australian Open and Qatar Open respectively. The Wimbledon champion will be looking to continue his strong form and secure his place in the final.

The other semi-final will feature a clash between World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz defeated Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4, whereas Medvedev ended Jack Draper’s title defense with a 6-1, 7-5 victory. The results set the stage for a compelling weekend of tennis at Indian Wells, with both semi-final matches promising high-level competition.

Aryna Sabalenka also advanced at the WTA 1,000 event, defeating Victoria Mboko 7-6 (7-0), 6-4. Sabalenka praised Mboko, describing her as a “future Grand Slam champion” and highlighting the bravery and aggression of the modern generation of players. “It’s incredible to see these young girls these days, how brave they are,” Sabalenka said. “They go out there, they go after their shots, they’re aggressive, they’re fighting.”

Sabalenka, a two-time runner-up at Indian Wells, will face 14th seed Linda Noskova in the semi-finals. Noskova secured her spot with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win over Australian qualifier Talia Gibson, who had previously become the first qualifier in 11 years to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The tournament also saw a surprise result with two-time Indian Wells champion Iga Swiatek being defeated in three sets by Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Svitolina will now face Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina for a place in the final. Swiatek’s loss means she will drop below Rybakina in the rankings next week.
