AltStore PAL Joins Fediverse: New App Discovery & Social Features

AltStore PAL Joins Fediverse: New App Discovery & Social Features

March 13, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

The European Union’s push for greater digital competition is already yielding unexpected results. AltStore PAL, an alternative app marketplace for iPhones and iPads, isn’t just gaining traction within the EU and Japan – it’s now integrating with the fediverse, a decentralized social web. This move, announced by AltStore PAL on Mastodon, could fundamentally change how independent apps are discovered and shared, offering a challenge to Apple’s App Store ecosystem in a way few anticipated.

What is the Fediverse and Why Does it Matter?

The “fediverse” is a network of interconnected, independently hosted social media servers. Unlike centralized platforms like Facebook or X (formerly Twitter), the fediverse operates on the ActivityPub protocol, allowing different servers – and therefore different social networks like Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky – to communicate with each other. Consider of it as email: you can use Gmail to send a message to someone with a Yahoo address. The fediverse aims to bring that interoperability to social networking.

AltStore PAL’s integration means users on these federated platforms can now directly interact with apps listed on explore.alt.store. Users can like and comment on apps, and those interactions will appear within the AltStore PAL app itself. Crucially, users can also now sign into AltStore PAL using their Bluesky or Mastodon accounts, streamlining the login process. Developers have the option to choose whether or not their apps participate in this federated system.

How AltStore PAL Works: A Different Approach to App Distribution

AltStore PAL emerged as a direct response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates greater competition in the app ecosystem. Unlike Apple’s App Store, which requires developers to adhere to strict review guidelines, AltStore PAL utilizes a “notarization” process. This ensures apps are malware-free and meet baseline platform integrity standards, but allows for more flexibility in terms of content, and functionality. As Yahoo Tech reports, alternative app marketplaces are responsible for support and refunds, rather than Apple.

Initially, AltStore PAL required a subscription fee to cover Apple’s Core Technology Fee – a charge levied on alternative app marketplaces. However, as How-To Geek detailed in August 2024, this subscription is now free for EU users. Existing subscribers will not be charged upon renewal, and the AltStore team has promised to recognize their past support.

AltStore PAL differs significantly from its predecessor, AltStore Classic. According to AltStore’s FAQ, AltStore PAL is EU-only, installs notarized apps, and doesn’t require a computer for installation. AltStore Classic, in contrast, installs .ipa files and has a limit of three apps.

The Ripple Effect: Who Benefits from This Integration?

The primary beneficiaries of AltStore PAL’s move into the fediverse are independent developers. Riley Testut, creator of AltStore PAL and the Delta Nintendo game emulator, told The Verge that the goal is to improve app discovery. By integrating with the fediverse, apps can reach a wider audience through existing social networks, potentially bypassing the discoverability challenges faced on centralized app stores. What we have is particularly important for smaller developers who may lack the marketing resources to compete with larger companies.

Users also stand to gain. The fediverse integration offers a new way to find and engage with apps, potentially uncovering hidden gems that might not be featured prominently in the App Store. The ability to sign in with existing Mastodon or Bluesky accounts simplifies the user experience, removing a barrier to entry.

The Core Technology Fee and the DMA: A Complex Landscape

Apple’s response to the DMA has been complex. Developers running alternative app marketplaces must accept new business terms, including the Core Technology Fee. As reported by Yahoo Tech, this fee is €0.50 for each first annual install of the marketplace app, even before reaching 1 million installs. This fee represents a significant cost for AltStore PAL and other alternative marketplaces, but the removal of the subscription for EU users demonstrates a willingness to absorb these costs to maintain accessibility.

Limitations and Potential Risks

Although the integration with the fediverse is a promising development, it’s important to acknowledge the limitations. The fediverse, while growing, is still relatively niche compared to mainstream social media platforms. The reach of apps discovered through this integration may be limited. The success of this approach hinges on developer adoption. If developers don’t choose to federate their apps, the benefits will be diminished.

Security remains a concern, as with any alternative app marketplace. While AltStore PAL utilizes a notarization process, it’s crucial for users to exercise caution and only install apps from trusted sources. The decentralized nature of the fediverse also introduces potential risks, as malicious actors could attempt to exploit the system.

What’s Next for AltStore PAL and the Alternative App Store Landscape?

AltStore PAL is planning to expand its availability beyond the EU and Japan, with launches planned in Australia, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. This expansion will be a key test of the platform’s viability and appeal. The company will also be closely monitoring the impact of the fediverse integration, gathering feedback from developers and users to refine the experience.

More broadly, the success of AltStore PAL and other alternative app marketplaces will depend on continued regulatory pressure on Apple and other tech giants. The DMA has opened the door to greater competition, but it remains to be seen whether this will translate into a truly level playing field. The evolution of the fediverse itself will also play a role, as its growth and adoption could significantly expand the reach of federated apps.
