Anthropic’s Claude Code Channels: Is OpenClaw Officially ‘Mogged’?

March 20, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Anthropic’s Claude Code Channels: A Direct Response to OpenClaw

Anthropic has launched Claude Code Channels, a new feature designed to integrate its Claude Code AI agent directly into popular messaging applications like Discord and Telegram. This move effectively addresses a key strength of the open-source autonomous AI agent, OpenClaw, allowing developers to interact with Claude Code on the go and receive automated code generation and task completion updates directly within their existing workflows. The release signals a shift towards asynchronous, autonomous partnerships in software development, moving beyond the traditional “ask-and-wait” model.

Previously, interacting with Claude Code required users to be within the Claude desktop application, a terminal, a supported developer environment, or the Claude mobile app via a somewhat unreliable feature called Remote Control. Now, Anthropic is offering a similar core functionality to OpenClaw, enabling a persistent, personal AI worker accessible 24/7 through commonly used messaging platforms.

The Rise of OpenClaw and the Appeal of Persistent Agents

OpenClaw, released in November 2025 by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, quickly gained traction among software developers and “vibe coders” for its ability to function as a persistent AI assistant. Steinberger initially named the project “Clawd” as a nod to Anthropic’s Claude model, but received a cease-and-desist letter for potential trademark violations. He was later hired by Anthropic’s competitor, OpenAI. VentureBeat details this history.

The appeal of OpenClaw lay in its ability to handle a wide range of tasks autonomously, from writing and organizing emails to creating entire applications and even managing social media campaigns. Users could simply message their AI worker and receive updates and completed tasks directly within their preferred messaging app. Although, OpenClaw’s open nature also presented challenges, including security risks related to access to personal data and file systems, and a steeper learning curve for non-technical users. This spurred the creation of alternative projects like NanoClaw, KiloClaw, and Nvidia’s NemoClaw, aiming for greater ease of use and security.

How Claude Code Channels Works: The Model Context Protocol

At the heart of Claude Code Channels is the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard introduced by Anthropic in 2024. MCP acts as a universal interface, allowing AI models to connect to external data and tools. In the Channels architecture, an MCP server functions as a bridge between Claude Code and messaging platforms. When a developer initiates a Claude Code session with the `–channels` flag, a polling service is activated. This service, powered by the Bun runtime (known for its speed in executing JavaScript), monitors designated plugins – currently Telegram and Discord – for incoming messages. These messages are then injected into the active session as events, allowing Claude Code to execute code, run tests, or fix bugs and respond directly within the messaging platform.

A key technical achievement is the persistence of these sessions. Unlike typical web chats that time out, a Claude Code session can now run in the background, waiting for a message to trigger action. This allows developers to effectively offload tasks to Claude Code and receive updates without constant interaction.

Setting Up the Connectors

Setting up the native connectors for Telegram and Discord requires Claude Code v2.1.80 or later and the Bun runtime installed on a desktop PC or Mac. For Telegram, users create a bot using BotFather, install the Telegram plugin within Claude Code, configure the bot’s token, and then “pair” their account using a security code. The Discord setup involves creating an application in the Discord Developer Portal, enabling the Message Content Intent, installing the Discord plugin, configuring the bot token, and pairing the account via a similar security code process.

Implications for Developers and the Future of AI-Assisted Coding

The introduction of Claude Code Channels democratizes mobile AI coding. Previously, developers relying on tools like OpenClaw for remote access and automation required complex self-hosted setups. Now, the integration is native, allowing developers to manage their coding environments from their phones with a simple Telegram bot and a few configuration steps. Anthropic’s inclusion of a “Fakechat” demo – a local-only chat UI – reflects a cautious approach, allowing developers to test the functionality before connecting to external servers.

This release highlights a growing trend in the AI industry: proprietary AI engines leveraging open standards. While Claude Code remains a proprietary product tied to Anthropic’s subscription plans (Pro, Max, and Enterprise), the use of the open-source MCP encourages a developer ecosystem to build connectors and expand the model’s functionality. The plugins for Telegram and Discord are hosted on GitHub under official Anthropic repositories, potentially allowing for community contributions and forks.

Security and Licensing Considerations

While offering convenience, the integration of AI agents into messaging platforms raises security considerations. OpenClaw’s accessibility, while a strength, also presented risks due to potential access to sensitive data. Anthropic’s brand reputation and commitment to AI safety, coupled with the controlled environment of Claude Code, aim to mitigate these concerns. However, users should still exercise caution and understand the permissions granted to the AI agent.

The licensing model is also noteworthy. Anthropic maintains control over the core Claude Code “brain,” but the open nature of MCP allows for community-driven development of connectors, fostering innovation while preserving the security and quality of the underlying model.

Community Reaction and the “OpenClaw Killer”

The response to Claude Code Channels has been overwhelmingly positive, with many users on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) labeling it the “OpenClaw killer.” The speed at which Anthropic has incorporated features previously found only in open-source projects – texting, thousands of MCP skills, and autonomous bug-fixing – has been particularly praised. Some users have even suggested that Anthropic has effectively “built OpenClaw” into its own platform, offering a more reliable and secure alternative.

As one user noted, Anthropic’s move simplifies the “hardware tax” for autonomy, eliminating the need for dedicated hardware to run open-source agents 24/7. The future will likely see continued development of connectors for other messaging platforms, driven by both Anthropic and the open-source community, further expanding the reach and capabilities of AI-assisted coding.

The next steps involve observing how developers integrate Claude Code Channels into their workflows and assessing the long-term impact on the open-source agent landscape. Further development of the MCP standard and the creation of new connectors will be crucial in shaping the future of AI-assisted development.
