Aphelion Release Date, Gameplay & Details: DON’T NOD’s Sci-Fi Adventure
Don’t Nod, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Life is Strange series, is preparing to launch its next major title, Aphelion, a cinematic action-adventure game set on a frozen, alien world. The game, which has already garnered attention for its realistic aesthetic and science fiction premise, is slated for release on April 28th. Perhaps even more compelling, Aphelion will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, broadening its accessibility to a wider audience.
A Desperate Search for Habitable Worlds
The narrative of Aphelion unfolds in the 2060s, a period where Earth has become increasingly uninhabitable. Humanity’s hope rests on Persephone, a newly discovered ninth planet at the edge of our solar system. The European Space Agency (ESA) dispatches the Hope-01 mission, led by astronauts Ariane and Thomas, to assess Persephone’s potential as a novel home for humankind. However, the mission quickly goes awry when their spacecraft crashes, scattering the two astronauts across the planet’s icy landscape. Players will primarily experience the story through the eyes of Ariane, as she embarks on a perilous journey to locate Thomas and complete their mission. The game’s setting, Persephone, is described as a vast, frozen world shaped by harsh weather and constantly shifting terrain, presenting significant challenges to survival.
Traversal and the Magnetic Reconstruction System
Aphelion blends exploration, traversal and stealth gameplay. Players will navigate the treacherous environment using tools like a pathfinder, oxygen tank, and grappling hook. A key gameplay mechanic involves utilizing dispersed magnetic forces on Persephone to reconstruct collapsed structures and facilitate travel. This system, as showcased in the gameplay trailer, allows players to manipulate the environment, creating pathways and overcoming obstacles. However, the astronauts aren’t alone on Persephone; a mysterious and potentially lethal threat lurks beneath the ice, adding an element of tension and suspense to the exploration.
Pricing and Editions
Aphelion will be priced at €29.99 on PC (via Steam) and €34.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A 10% discount will be available on Steam and Xbox during the launch window. Don’t Nod is too offering two special editions:

Drawing Parallels to Sci-Fi Classics
Early impressions of Aphelion suggest a compelling blend of influences. Polygon’s preview draws comparisons to Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, noting the shared themes of Earth’s decline and the search for a habitable planet. However, the game also evokes the atmosphere of dread and isolation found in Ridley Scott’s Alien, particularly in its emphasis on stealth and the presence of an unknown, hostile entity. Don’t Nod collaborated with the ESA during development, aiming for a degree of scientific realism in the game’s depiction of space travel and planetary exploration. This collaboration is reflected in the Pioneer Edition’s inclusion of an ESA-designed sticker.
A Blend of Genres and Gameplay Styles
Aphelion appears to be a deliberate departure from some of Don’t Nod’s previous work, while still retaining the studio’s signature focus on narrative and character development. PC Gamer highlights the game’s integration of elements from Jusant, Don’t Nod’s rock-climbing platformer, with the more story-driven experiences the studio is known for. The 11-chapter structure suggests a substantial campaign, with the initial build focusing on the first and fourth chapters, each lasting approximately an hour. The game’s emphasis on resource management and environmental interaction adds a layer of strategic depth to the exploration and traversal mechanics.
What Comes Next: Launch and Beyond
With the release date firmly set, the immediate focus for Don’t Nod will be on finalizing the game and ensuring a smooth launch across all platforms. Post-launch support, including potential patches and updates, will likely depend on player feedback and the game’s commercial performance. The availability on Xbox Game Pass is expected to drive significant initial interest and provide a valuable platform for gathering player data. The success of Aphelion could pave the way for further exploration of the science fiction genre by Don’t Nod, potentially establishing a new franchise alongside the beloved Life is Strange series.
