Apple MacBook Neo: Record Sales Driven by Lower Price

March 20, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Apple is reporting record-breaking sales for the Mac, driven by strong first-time customer adoption. Tim Cook announced Friday that the Mac experienced its best launch week ever for fresh users, a surge largely attributed to the recently released MacBook Neo. While the MacBook Air and Pro lines received internal component upgrades during the same period, these typically don’t generate this level of sales momentum, according to Cook. 9to5Mac reports that this launch is a significant milestone for Apple.

A New Price Point for Mac

The MacBook Neo launched on March 11th, with a starting price of $599 USD for a configuration featuring 8GB of RAM and excluding Touch ID. This represents the lowest entry price ever for a Mac. For comparison, the MacBook Air 13 currently retails for around $15,000 NOK (approximately $1,400 USD). Students can acquire the Neo for an even lower price of $499. The device is powered by a version of the A18 Pro chip, previously found in the iPhone 16 Pro, and is available in Citrus, Blush, and Indigo, alongside the traditional silver finish.

The positive response to the launch is unsurprising, particularly given early reviews (List Directory has received a unit for testing). The most significant factor appears to be the price. As one user commented on X (formerly Twitter), “It’s almost like price was the barrier all along.” AppleInsider highlights the impact of this affordability on attracting new customers.

Beyond Price: The Broader Launch Context

This launch cycle was unusually substantial for Apple. Alongside the MacBook Neo, the company also released updated MacBook Air models featuring the M5 chip, and MacBook Pro versions powered by the M5 Pro and M5 Max. This represented the largest Mac launch in quite some time. However, the affordable Neo appears to be the primary driver of the record-breaking first-time buyer numbers. The lower price point is expected to encourage further purchases within the Apple ecosystem, such as AirPods, iPhones, iPads, and higher-end MacBooks in the future.

Shipping Delays Reflect High Demand

Current estimates from Apple’s online store in the US indicate delivery times between April 6th and April 13th for orders placed today. Customers seeking faster delivery may necessitate to check Apple’s physical stores or authorized retailers like Amazon and Walmart. In Norway, the quickest delivery for the base model is April 7th, while the 512GB version with Touch ID is not expected to ship until April 21st. PCMag reports on these ongoing shipping delays.

Strategic Importance for Apple

This record is strategically important for Apple. Attracting users who previously couldn’t afford a Mac, or who opted for Windows, is precisely what Apple aimed to achieve with the lower price point. The company hopes to see increased adoption within the education sector as well. Numerous commentators have already noted that Windows machines in the same price range often struggle to compete. The A18 Pro chip, while a mobile processor, demonstrates Apple’s ability to leverage its silicon expertise across its product lines.

Mac just had its best launch week ever for first-time Mac customers. We love seeing the enthusiasm!

Looking ahead, the success of the MacBook Neo will likely influence Apple’s future pricing strategies and product development. Continued monitoring of sales figures and customer feedback will be crucial. The next major design updates are anticipated next year, and the momentum generated by the Neo could significantly impact those releases.
