AWS News Roundup: Route 53 Global Resolver, S3 Updates & More | March 2026

AWS News Roundup: Route 53 Global Resolver, S3 Updates & More | March 2026

March 22, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

This week brings a significant milestone for cloud storage, alongside updates to DNS resolution and a range of other AWS services. Amazon S3, the foundational object storage service that helped define cloud infrastructure, celebrated its 20th anniversary this past week, launching publicly on March 14, 2006. Beyond the anniversary, Amazon Route 53 Global Resolver has reached general availability and several other services have received notable updates.

Two Decades of S3: From Humble Beginnings to 500 Trillion Objects

What began as a simple object storage service has evolved into a massive, globally distributed system. As of March 2026, Amazon S3 stores over 500 trillion objects, processing more than 200 million requests per second across hundreds of exabytes of data. Remarkably, the price for storage has fallen to just over 2 cents per gigabyte – an approximately 85% reduction since its initial launch. This cost reduction has been a key driver in the widespread adoption of cloud storage, enabling everything from data archiving and disaster recovery to large-scale data analytics. The initial announcement, as noted in an AWS blog post, was remarkably understated, a single paragraph on the “What’s Fresh” page.

Sébastien Stormacq’s detailed look at the engineering behind S3 and its future direction, “Twenty years of Amazon S3 and building what’s next”, highlights the core principles that have guided its development: security, durability (designed for 11 nines of data protection – 99.999999999%), availability, performance, and elasticity. These principles aren’t just marketing buzzwords; they represent a fundamental commitment to providing a reliable and scalable storage solution. For those interested in the early days of AWS and the companies that helped shape its development, Amazon’s article on early AWS customers provides valuable insight.

Account Regional Namespaces for S3: Enhanced Bucket Name Control

Alongside the anniversary celebrations, AWS introduced a new feature for S3: account regional namespaces for general purpose buckets. This enhancement addresses a common challenge – bucket name collisions. Previously, bucket names had to be globally unique across all AWS accounts. With account regional namespaces, you can now create buckets within your own account’s regional namespace by appending a unique account suffix to the bucket name, ensuring that your desired names are reserved exclusively for your use. What we have is enforced through AWS IAM policies and AWS Organizations service control policies using the s3:x-amz-bucket-namespace condition key. Channy Yun’s post provides a comprehensive overview of this new capability and how to implement it.

Route 53 Global Resolver: Secure, Anycast DNS Resolution Now Generally Available

The featured launch this week is the general availability of Amazon Route 53 Global Resolver. This internet-reachable anycast DNS resolver provides secure DNS resolution for authorized clients from any location. I previously covered the preview of this service at re:Invent 2025, and its general availability marks a significant step forward in DNS security and performance.

Route 53 Global Resolver is now available across 30 AWS Regions, supporting both IPv4 and IPv6 traffic. It allows authorized clients within an organization to resolve public internet domains and private domains associated with Route 53 private hosted zones, regardless of their location. Crucially, it includes DNS query filtering to block malicious domains, domains flagged as unsafe for work, and those associated with advanced DNS threats like DNS tunneling and Domain Generation Algorithms (DGAs). Centralized query logging provides enhanced visibility and auditing capabilities. The general availability release adds protection against Dictionary DGA threats, expanding its security coverage.

How Anycast DNS Resolution Works

Anycast DNS resolution relies on a network of geographically distributed servers that share the same IP address. When a client sends a DNS query, it’s routed to the nearest server in the anycast network. This reduces latency and improves performance. Route 53 Global Resolver builds on this foundation by adding security features like query filtering and centralized logging, making it a robust solution for organizations with global operations and stringent security requirements.

Other AWS Launches This Week

Beyond S3 and Route 53, several other AWS services received updates:

  • Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime: Now supports stateful MCP server features, enabling more complex and interactive conversational experiences. This allows developers to build agents that maintain context across multiple interactions.
  • Amazon WorkSpaces: Now supports Microsoft Windows Server 2025, offering enhanced security features like Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM 2.0) and UEFI Secure Boot.
  • AWS Builder ID: Now supports Sign in with GitHub and Amazon, simplifying access to AWS Builder Center, AWS Training and Certification, and Kiro.
  • Amazon Redshift: Introduces reusable templates for COPY operations, streamlining data ingestion and improving consistency.

Looking Ahead: AWS Events and Community Engagement

AWS continues to invest in community engagement and education. Upcoming events include AWS Summits in Paris, London, and Bengaluru, as well as AWS Community Days in various European cities. AWS will also have a presence at NVIDIA GTC 2026, showcasing its latest innovations in cloud and AI. The AWS Builder Center remains a valuable resource for developers, providing access to content, events, and a community of builders.

For a comprehensive list of AWS announcements, the AWS News Blog and the What’s New with AWS page are essential resources. The evolution of Amazon S3, coupled with the ongoing innovation in services like Route 53 Global Resolver, demonstrates AWS’s continued commitment to providing a secure, scalable, and reliable cloud platform.
