BlizzCon 2026: Esports Tournaments Confirmed – Overwatch, WoW & More

BlizzCon 2026: Esports Tournaments Confirmed – Overwatch, WoW & More

March 19, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

BlizzCon 2026 is set to feature a robust lineup of esports competitions, with five major tournaments confirmed to take place during the event. The annual celebration of Blizzard Entertainment’s gaming franchises will once again showcase competitive play across a range of titles, including Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and classic Blizzard titles. This year’s event, scheduled for September 12-13, 2026, at the Anaheim Convention Center, promises a significant return to form for BlizzCon’s esports presence.

Overwatch World Cup Returns to Anaheim

The Overwatch World Cup (OWWC) will be a central attraction at BlizzCon 2026, marking a return to the Anaheim Convention Center Arena. According to Blizzard, this year’s tournament celebrates 10 years of Overwatch Esports. The OWWC will feature a total of 52 teams competing, with 30 ultimately advancing to the main tournament. These 30 teams will be comprised of 19 invited teams – selected based on performance in the 2023 tournament and top-performing teams in the EMEA region – and 11 wildcard teams who will earn their spots through a new series of Conference Cups. The Conference Cups represent a new pathway to participation, expanding opportunities for teams to qualify for the prestigious international competition. The OWWC distinguishes itself from other esports events by focusing on national and regional representation rather than a traditional prize pool, emphasizing the spirit of international competition.

Blizzard Classic Cup: A Nostalgic Showdown

A new addition to the BlizzCon esports lineup is the Blizzard Classic Cup. This cross-title team showdown will pit iconic players against each other in a series of matches featuring older Blizzard titles. The competition will span four games: Heroes of the Storm, StarCraft: Remastered, StarCraft II, and Warcraft III: Reforged. As announced by Blizzard, Nick “Tasteless” Plott and Dan “Artosis” Stemkoski will serve as captains, drafting teams and even participating in casting select matches. The Classic Cup will offer a total prize pool of $100,000 USD.

World of Warcraft Esports on Display

World of Warcraft esports will be well-represented at BlizzCon 2026 with two major events: the Midnight Mythic Dungeon International (MDI) and the World of Warcraft Arena World Championship (AWC). These tournaments showcase different aspects of World of Warcraft’s competitive scene, from timed dungeon runs in the MDI to player-versus-player combat in the AWC. Combined, these WoW events will offer a total prize pool of $600,000. The MDI focuses on speed and coordination as teams race to complete Mythic+ dungeons, whereas the AWC highlights strategic team play and individual skill in arena battles.

Hearthstone Masters Tour Continues

The Hearthstone Masters Tour will also return to BlizzCon 2026, continuing the tradition of showcasing top Hearthstone players competing for a place in the global rankings. While the specific prize pool for the Hearthstone Masters Tour is yet to be confirmed, the tournament will provide a platform for skilled players to demonstrate their mastery of the popular collectible card game. The Masters Tour format typically involves a series of Swiss rounds followed by a single-elimination bracket, testing players’ deck-building skills and strategic decision-making.

The Evolution of BlizzCon Esports

BlizzCon’s esports offerings have evolved significantly since the event’s inception. Initially focused primarily on StarCraft II and Warcraft III, the event has expanded to include a wider range of Blizzard titles as the company’s esports ecosystem has grown. The addition of the Blizzard Classic Cup represents a deliberate effort to acknowledge and celebrate the history of Blizzard Esports, appealing to long-time fans while introducing newer players to classic titles. The introduction of Conference Cups for the Overwatch World Cup also demonstrates a commitment to expanding access and fostering a more inclusive competitive scene.

What Comes Next for Blizzard Esports

Following the announcement of the BlizzCon 2026 esports lineup, the focus will shift to the qualifying stages for each tournament. The Overwatch World Cup Conference Cups will be crucial for teams hoping to secure a spot in the main event, while the Hearthstone Masters Tour will continue its regular season of qualifiers. Blizzard will likely release more detailed information regarding tournament formats, schedules, and broadcast details in the coming months. Further announcements regarding the draft process for the Blizzard Classic Cup, including the selection criteria and team compositions, are also anticipated. Fans can stay updated on the latest developments by following Blizzard’s official esports channels and news website. The official BlizzCon website will serve as a central hub for information regarding the event’s esports schedule and related news.
