The little, artisanal dairy Boréalait, based in Saint-Félix-de-Dalquier, Quebec, is expanding its reach beyond its regional base, with its yogurts now appearing on the shelves of Marchés TAU, a natural and organic grocery chain. This expansion represents a significant step for the family-run operation, which has been working for years to overcome logistical challenges and establish a presence in larger southern Quebec markets.

For Boréalait, simply getting its product to market is an achievement. Copropriétaire Evelyne Rancourt explained that “it represents several hours of work, and we’ve been looking for a route for several years, trying to produce it work in refrigerated transport, in small volumes.” The company first began distributing products in Montreal last fall, but reaching stores across the province required navigating the considerable distance from their Abitibi-Témiscamingue location – a journey Rancourt describes as “just… crossing the park [de La Vérendrye]” for a small business.

Maintaining Quality Over Distance

The primary hurdle to wider distribution isn’t just distance, but maintaining the necessary refrigeration throughout the journey. Boréalait’s yogurt boasts a 45-day shelf life, which provides a crucial buffer. The company’s commitment to quality begins with its source: 100% of the milk used in Boréalait products comes from their own Jersey cows, and is pasteurized but not homogenized. According to the company website, this process preserves the milk’s nutritional qualities and flavor, recalling the taste of “milk from yesteryear” with the cream rising to the surface. They also utilize returnable glass bottles, a deliberate choice to prioritize sustainability and maintain product quality.

Boréalait isn’t just focused on yogurt, however. The company also produces cheese, and Rancourt sees yogurt as the key product for expanding beyond their regional market. Her ambition is clear: to grow the reference point for yogurt in Quebec. “I’ve set myself the goal – and I say this humbly – to be the best yogurt in Quebec,” she stated. “In the sense that if someone thinks of a yogurt manufacturer, their first instinct will be to think of Boréalait.”

A Family Affair Rooted in Tradition

The story of Boréalait is deeply personal. Founded by Evelyne Rancourt and Benoit Larochelle after raising their four sons – Éloi, Robin, Thomas, and Jérôme – the company represents a shift from family life to a new professional challenge. The arrival of their youngest child, Léonie, further cemented the family’s commitment to the business. Their Facebook page highlights the artisanal nature of their operation and their dedication to sharing their passion for agriculture and their region.

This dedication extends to how they plan to build brand recognition outside of their immediate area. Recognizing the difficulty of offering samples in every grocery store, Boréalait’s owners are actively engaging with retailers and participating in events to introduce their yogurt to a wider audience. This direct engagement is a key component of their strategy to stand out in a competitive market.

Expanding Distribution and Facing Challenges

The move to Marchés TAU, as reported by Radio-Canada, signifies a significant milestone in Boréalait’s growth. Marchés TAU specializes in natural and organic foods, aligning with Boréalait’s commitment to quality ingredients and sustainable practices. This partnership provides a valuable platform for reaching a consumer base that actively seeks out artisanal and locally sourced products.

However, the challenges of scaling up production and distribution remain. Maintaining the cold chain – ensuring the yogurt remains consistently refrigerated – is a constant concern. The company’s 45-day shelf life provides some leeway, but careful logistics and temperature monitoring are essential.
