Destiny 2 Player Count Drops as Bungie Focuses on Marathon or Marathon’s Launch Threatens Destiny 2’s Future – Player Numbers Plummet

Destiny 2 Player Count Drops as Bungie Focuses on Marathon or Marathon’s Launch Threatens Destiny 2’s Future – Player Numbers Plummet

The situation at Bungie is increasingly precarious. Although the studio has placed a significant bet on its newly released game, Marathon, this strategy may be coming at the expense of its flagship title, Destiny 2. Recent data indicates a dramatic decline in player engagement with Destiny 2, raising concerns about the long-term viability of the franchise and, potentially, the studio itself.

Destiny 2, a mainstay in the online multiplayer genre for nine years, has historically provided Bungie with a stable revenue stream, even during challenging periods. However, that stability appears to be eroding. According to Paul Tassi of Forbes, Destiny 2 is experiencing a substantial drop in player numbers. Steam charts reveal a stark contrast: where approximately 70,000 players were actively engaged with the game just months ago, the current peak concurrent player count has fallen below 10,000, with a recent 24-hour peak of just 9,000 players as reported by IGN.

This decline isn’t solely attributable to the launch of Marathon, which currently attracts between 45,000 and 59,000 players. The situation is further complicated by delays and a perceived lack of consistent content updates for Destiny 2. The planned “Shadow and Order” update, a significant patch, was postponed from March 3rd to June 9th according to PPE.pl. This delay follows a three-month gap since the last major event, the Star Wars-inspired “Renegades,” and a longer period since the release of “Edge of Fate,” which was intended to initiate a cycle of more frequent updates.

Player Exodus and Long-Term Trends

The data reveals a concerning trend of player attrition. Since the release of the Lightfall expansion in July 2023, a staggering 91% of Steam users have abandoned Destiny 2. Looking back further, to the launch of The Final Shape in 2024, that figure rises to 97%. This suggests a fundamental issue with the game’s current trajectory and Bungie’s content delivery model. The studio’s reliance on large expansions followed by extended periods of relative content drought appears to be driving players away.

The launch of Marathon itself has faced criticism. Forbes reports on growing dissatisfaction with the game as a competitive sport, highlighting potential issues with its design and execution.

Adding to the challenges, Bungie recently acknowledged and is addressing an issue with audio cues in Marathon. Specifically, the distance at which gunfire could be heard was initially overcorrected, providing an unfair advantage to players. The studio has stated it will adjust this mechanic in a future update as detailed by Video Games Chronicle. While this demonstrates a willingness to respond to player feedback, it also highlights potential issues with the game’s initial development and testing phases.

Implications for Bungie and the Future of Destiny 2

The current situation suggests that Bungie’s existing publishing model may not be sustainable. The studio is now facing a critical juncture: whether to continue investing in Destiny 2, or to focus its resources entirely on Marathon. The success of Marathon is now paramount. If it fails to gain significant traction, Bungie may be forced to make difficult decisions about the future of both the game and the studio itself.

The decline in Destiny 2’s player base raises broader questions about the long-term viability of the “games as a service” model, particularly within the looter-shooter genre. This model relies on consistent content updates and player engagement to maintain revenue streams. When that engagement falters, as it appears to be doing with Destiny 2, the entire system is at risk.

The postponement of the “Shadow and Order” update, coupled with the extended periods between major content releases, underscores the challenges of maintaining player interest in a constantly evolving online game. Bungie will need to carefully evaluate its content strategy and identify ways to deliver more frequent and engaging updates to recapture the attention of its dwindling player base.

What comes next for Bungie and Destiny 2 remains uncertain. The studio’s immediate priority will be to address the issues with Marathon and build a strong foundation for its future. Simultaneously, they must determine a path forward for Destiny 2, whether that involves a significant overhaul, a renewed commitment to content updates, or, a phased sunsetting of the game. The next few months will be crucial in determining the fate of both franchises and the future of Bungie as a whole.
