Devnexus 2026: Java, AI & Enterprise Development Highlights | InfoQ

March 16, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Devnexus 2026, the long-running Java ecosystem conference, wrapped up on March 6th in Atlanta, Georgia, drawing approximately 1400 developers. This year’s event, marking its 23rd iteration, placed a significant emphasis on the intersection of artificial intelligence and Java development, alongside core Java technologies, security practices, and career advancement. The conference, held at the Georgia World Congress Center, featured over 100 sessions across eight tracks, including dedicated streams for AI Generative and AI in Practice, signaling a clear industry focus.

The Enterprise AI Challenge: A Java Developer’s Role

A central theme emerging from Devnexus 2026 was the assertion that Java developers are uniquely positioned to address the challenges of implementing artificial intelligence within enterprise environments. Rod Johnson, CEO of Embabel, delivered a keynote address, “It’s Up To Java Developers to Fix Enterprise AI,” outlining the risks associated with current approaches to GenAI in business. Johnson highlighted issues like non-determinism, the potential for “hallucinations” (incorrect or misleading outputs), scalability concerns, and difficulties in testing and validation. He argued that many GenAI projects fail given that they lack the predictability and reliability required for critical business applications.

Johnson proposed three key strategies for Java developers to improve enterprise AI: building agents with robust guardrails to minimize non-determinism; integrating AI solutions incrementally, leveraging existing domain expertise and coding skills; and structuring interactions with Large Language Models (LLMs) using defined data types. He emphasized that a focus on structure and domain integration, rather than simply chasing the latest AI trends, is crucial for successful enterprise adoption. This approach, he suggested, requires the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) developer community to “grow up” and prioritize real innovation over superficial adoption.

Beyond AI: Core Java, Frameworks, and Security

While AI dominated much of the conversation, Devnexus 2026 maintained its traditional focus on core Java technologies and related frameworks. The conference schedule included dedicated tracks for Core Java and Java Frameworks, offering sessions on the latest features and best practices. Security remained a critical area of focus, with a dedicated Security and Developer Tools track addressing vulnerabilities and secure coding practices. The event featured 116 speakers delivering six full-day workshops and talks, providing attendees with a comprehensive overview of the Java ecosystem.

Community and Leadership Summits

Devnexus 2026 also served as a platform for fostering community engagement and leadership development. The annual summits for Java User Group (JUG) leaders and Java Champions were held on March 4th. JUG leaders, representing groups from around the world, discussed strategies for improving their local communities, with Ammar Yusuf, Staff Engineer at Alchemain, Inc. And Co-Organizer of the Tampa JUG, sharing insights from his experiences. Bruno Souza and Luiz Real facilitated a discussion to identify common challenges faced by JUG leaders. The Java Champions focused on refining the nomination and election process for this prestigious group. This commitment to community building underscores Devnexus’s role as a central hub for the Java developer ecosystem.

Notably, the conference hosted the first-ever AI Leadership Summit, dubbed Advantage. Designed for CTOs, CIOs, VPs of Engineering, and Technical Leads, this summit featured presentations from industry leaders including Frank Greco, Pratik Patel, Rod Johnson, David Parry, Dennis Ruzeski, Travis Gosselin, Laurie Lay, Kenneth Kousen, and Adib Saikali. The summit provided a forum for discussing the strategic implications of AI for technology leadership.

Supporting Women in Tech and Career Development

Devnexus 2026 demonstrated a commitment to diversity and inclusion with a Women in Tech luncheon. Facilitated by Najae Stevenson, Senior Consultant at CGI, the luncheon fostered open conversations around challenges faced by women in the tech industry, including confidence, visibility, career growth, compensation, and the impact of AI on roles. Jeanne Boyarsky, a Java Champion and Software Developer, described the luncheon as a welcoming space for both women and allies to discuss important issues, with a particular focus on work-life balance. Approximately 50 attendees participated in the luncheon.

Recognizing the importance of career development, the conference also offered a Mentoring Hub, organized by Souza and Real. This hub provided 40 one-on-one mentoring sessions with Devnexus speakers, Java Champions, and other industry experts. Mentoring topics included career growth, open-source contributions, and navigating the transition from engineering to developer relations.

Looking Ahead: Devnexus 2027

Pratik Patel announced that Devnexus 2027 is already in the planning stages, scheduled for Monday-Wednesday, April 5-7, 2027. The continued focus on AI, coupled with the enduring commitment to core Java technologies and community building, suggests that Devnexus will remain a vital event for Java developers for years to come. The conference’s evolution reflects the broader trends within the Java ecosystem, adapting to modern challenges and opportunities while maintaining its core values of technical excellence and community engagement. Further details regarding the 2027 event, including speaker announcements and session schedules, will be released in the coming months.
