Gaming Like It’s 1930: Game Jam Winners Announced!

March 22, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

The winners of the 8th annual Public Domain Game Jam, Gaming Like It’s 1930!, have been announced, showcasing a diverse range of creative projects inspired by works entering the public domain this year. The jam, hosted by Randy Lubin & Copia Gaming, challenges developers to create games – both digital and analog – based on the artistic and literary output of 1930. The full list of submissions offers a fascinating gaze at how creators are interpreting and remixing these now-accessible works.

Analog Innovation: Diary of a Provincial Lady

Taking the top prize in the Analog Game category is Diary of a Provincial Lady by donnabooby. The game cleverly adapts E.M. Delafield’s 1930 comedic novel, a story that has remained continuously in print since its release. The game blends the mechanics of party games like Apples to Apples with the artistic technique of blackout poetry. Players modify excerpts from the diary to fit randomly selected prompts, competing to collect cards featuring illustrations from the original book. Judges praised its simplicity, humor, and fitting adaptation of the source material. The game’s success suggests a potential for expansion beyond the jam format, mirroring the enduring popularity of Delafield’s novel.

Digital Delights: I Could Do That! and a Challenge to Dismissal

Geouug secured the Best Digital Game award with I Could Do That!, a game directly inspired by Piet Mondrian’s iconic Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow. Mondrian’s work, now free to use, often elicits the dismissive comment that anyone could replicate it. This game takes that sentiment as its core concept. Players are briefly shown the painting and then challenged to recreate it on a blank canvas, receiving a detailed pixel-by-pixel comparison and score. It’s a playful and insightful response to the undervaluation of abstract art, demonstrating the skill and precision often hidden within seemingly simple compositions. Interestingly, Geouug similarly won the Best Visuals award, demonstrating a strong showing across multiple categories.

Adaptation and Remix: Reimagining Classics and Historical Context

The jam also recognized excellence in adaptation and remixing. Marshview Games’ I am Sam Spade earned the Best Adaptation title for its innovative accept on Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel, The Maltese Falcon. The game is a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) that draws inspiration from Raymond Chandler’s later detective stories, particularly his exploration of Philip Marlowe’s inner life – a characteristic largely absent in Hammett’s more stoic portrayal of Sam Spade. By utilizing mechanics from the minimalist TTRPG Everyone is John, the game allows all players to embody different facets of Spade’s personality, offering a unique and thoughtful interpretation of the classic detective. Techdirt’s coverage highlights the game’s intriguing approach to adaptation.

Autumn Chen’s Lilac Song was awarded Best Remix. This interactive fiction game is set during the final years of the Weimar Republic, placing the player as a servant in the household of Prussian Minister-President Otto Braun. The game tackles complex themes of gender, democracy, socialism, and the rise of Nazism, subtly integrating public domain works from 1930 – paintings by Klee and Kandinsky, and early 20th-century musical compositions – to enhance the narrative without overshadowing it. The thoughtful integration of these elements earned it the top remix prize.

Unearthing Hidden Gems: CARAMENTRAN and the Power of Obscure Sources

The Best Deep Cut award went to CARAMENTRAN, a collaborative effort by RedSPINE and poymakes. The game draws inspiration from a little-known French carnival tradition involving the scapegoating and symbolic burning of an effigy representing the “King of Carnival.” CARAMENTRAN is a haunting video game where the player embodies this effigy, struggling against the flames and the accusations of the townspeople. What sets this game apart is its striking visual style, constructed from collages of obscure 1930s archival images, postcards, and advertisements. This commitment to unearthing and utilizing overlooked sources demonstrates a remarkable level of research and artistic vision.

A Double Win for Geouug: As I Lay Flying and Visual Excellence

Geouug’s success didn’t stop at Best Digital Game. As I Lay Flying, based on William Faulkner’s 1930 novel As I Lay Dying, also secured the Best Visuals award. The game transforms Faulkner’s somber narrative into a slapstick physics-based challenge even as retaining the story’s emotional core. The game’s polished graphics, including original character portraits and parallax backgrounds, were a key factor in its win. This marks the first time in the jam’s history that a single designer has won in two categories.

Beyond the Winners: Honorable Mentions and Continued Exploration

The judges also highlighted several honorable mentions, including The Agatha Effect by A.M.Homunculus and Matteo Ignesti, a narrative game involving a seance with Agatha Christie; Early Sunday Morning by Nora Katz, a unique game that takes place in the real world, combining hide-and-seek with a scavenger hunt; The House Hunter Mystery by Gwen C. Katz, a Nancy Drew-inspired object-finding game; and Poetry Appreciator 2K26 by ZapJackson, a comedic exploration of T.S. Eliot’s Ash Wednesday. Discussion on Reddit’s r/gamejams demonstrates the community’s enthusiasm for these projects.

The winning designers will be contacted through Itch.io to arrange their prizes. Organizers plan to release spotlight posts detailing each winning entry and discuss them further on the Techdirt Podcast. Interested parties are encouraged to explore all the submissions on Itch.io, showcasing the creative potential unlocked by the annual influx of public domain works. The jam serves as a compelling example of how revisiting and reinterpreting past artistic and literary achievements can inspire fresh and innovative forms of expression.
