Gemini Now Imports ChatGPT & Claude Chat History – & Rebrands ‘Past Chats’ to ‘Memory’

Gemini Now Imports ChatGPT & Claude Chat History – & Rebrands ‘Past Chats’ to ‘Memory’

March 27, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Google is now offering a way to bring your chat history from competing AI platforms, ChatGPT and Claude, directly into Gemini. This modern feature, announced shortly after reports of its development surfaced, aims to streamline the experience for users considering a switch and reduce the need to re-establish context with a new chatbot.

The frustration of starting from scratch with a new AI – repeatedly explaining your preferences and background – is a common one. Gemini’s import tools address this directly, offering two distinct methods for transferring your existing conversations and personalized information. This move comes as the AI landscape continues to mature, with Google, OpenAI (ChatGPT), and Anthropic (Claude) vying for dominance.

Importing Conversations: A Direct Transfer

The first method, “Importing Chats,” allows users to transfer their complete conversation history. Both ChatGPT and Claude allow users to export their data as a .zip file. Gemini users can then upload these files through a dedicated portal at gemini.google.com/import. These imported chats will appear in the Gemini side panel, clearly distinguished from native Gemini conversations with a unique icon. Users have the ability to search within these imported histories and delete entire batches if desired. Currently, the system supports up to five .zip files per day, with a maximum file size of 5 GB each.

Beyond Chats: Importing “Memory”

The second feature, “Importing Memory,” tackles the challenge of transferring learned preferences. Rather than simply importing conversations, this method focuses on distilling the key information an AI has gathered about you. Gemini provides a specific prompt that users copy and paste into their existing AI platform (ChatGPT or Claude). The platform then generates a summary of your key facts and context, which is then pasted back into Gemini. This allows Gemini to quickly understand your preferences without needing to re-learn them through extended interaction.

“Past Chats” Evolves into “Memory”

Accompanying these import features is a rebranding of Gemini’s “past chats” functionality to simply “Memory.” This change reflects Google’s broader vision for Gemini as a more cohesive and context-aware assistant. The goal is to integrate these imported insights with data from other Google services – such as Gmail, Photos, and Search – to provide a more personalized and seamless experience. Access to this integration, while, requires users to grant the necessary permissions.

For example, if you previously used another AI to research hotels for an upcoming trip, Gemini can now access that context to assist you in finalizing your itinerary without requiring you to repeat your requirements. This interconnectedness is a key differentiator for Gemini, leveraging Google’s extensive ecosystem of services.

How Does Gemini Compare to ChatGPT and Claude?

The introduction of these import features arrives as Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude continue to evolve as distinct AI platforms. A recent comparison by SparkAgentAI (December 2025) highlights their differing strengths: ChatGPT excels at reasoning and boasts a robust API ecosystem, Claude is known for its writing quality and safety, and Gemini shines in multimodal capabilities and document/video analysis. According to the report, OpenAI (ChatGPT) currently leads in agentic cost efficiency, Claude in long-context cost predictability, and Gemini in low-cost multimodal inference.

Another analysis from ChatSmith (March 25, 2026) notes that ChatGPT processes over one billion queries daily as of early 2026, establishing it as the most widely used AI assistant. The same report details pricing tiers as of 2025: ChatGPT (GPT-4o family) ranges from $3-$15 per 1M tokens, Claude (3.7 Sonnet/Haiku) from $1-$15, and Gemini (2.0 Flash/Pro) from $0.50-$10. Gemini’s Flash model is currently the cheapest LLM available.

Rollout and Regional Availability

The import features are currently rolling out globally, but with some limitations. Due to local data regulations, the functionality is not yet available in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, or the United Kingdom. For users in other regions, the tools can be found under the “Settings & Help” gear icon within the Gemini web interface.

What to Expect Next

The success of these import features will likely depend on the ease and accuracy of the data transfer process. Google will need to closely monitor user feedback and address any issues that arise. Further integration with Google’s suite of services is likewise anticipated, potentially expanding the scope of “Memory” to include data from Google Docs, Calendar, and other applications. The company will also need to navigate the evolving landscape of data privacy regulations, particularly as it seeks to expand availability to regions like the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. The ongoing development of Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude suggests a continued focus on personalization, multimodal capabilities, and cost efficiency, as each platform strives to become the central AI assistant for its users.
