iPhone 17e vs iPhone 17: Which Budget iPhone Wins?

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 17: Which Budget iPhone Wins?

March 17, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

The iPhone 17 and its more budget-friendly sibling, the iPhone 17e, are both poised to launch in 2026, and while the iPhone 17e offers welcome improvements over the iPhone 16e – including a processor upgrade, increased base storage to 256GB, and the addition of MagSafe – a slight price difference currently makes the standard iPhone 17 the more compelling choice for most consumers. This isn’t to say the iPhone 17e is a bad phone. it represents a significant step forward for Apple’s lower-cost offerings. However, when factoring in the features offered by the base iPhone 17, particularly with current discounts, the value proposition shifts decidedly in its favor.

Understanding the iPhone 17e’s Improvements

Apple has addressed several key shortcomings of the iPhone 16e with the iPhone 17e. The upgrade to a more modern processor and modem will undoubtedly improve performance and connectivity. Increasing the starting storage to 256GB is a particularly significant benefit, addressing a common complaint about base-model iPhones. The inclusion of MagSafe, Apple’s magnetic attachment system for accessories, adds versatility and convenience. These improvements, all while maintaining the AU$999 starting price, make the iPhone 17e a much stronger contender in the budget smartphone market. A recent review highlights these enhancements, praising the faster performance, smarter camera, and increased storage capacity.

Limitations of the iPhone 17e: Camera and Display

Despite these improvements, the iPhone 17e isn’t without its limitations. The single 48MP rear camera, while capable, may not satisfy users who desire more photographic flexibility. Many smartphone users rely heavily on their devices for photography, and a more versatile camera system – with features like an ultrawide lens or telephoto capabilities – can be crucial.

Perhaps the most noticeable drawback is the 60Hz display refresh rate. In a market where 120Hz displays are becoming increasingly common, even in mid-range phones like the Google Pixel 10a and the Nothing Phone 4(a), the 60Hz screen on the iPhone 17e can experience noticeably less smooth. What we have is especially true for users accustomed to higher refresh rates, making scrolling and animations appear less fluid. The difference can be jarring and detract from the overall user experience.

Why the iPhone 17 Takes the Lead

Considering these limitations, the standard iPhone 17 emerges as the better overall value, especially with current promotional offers. Amazon Australia is currently discounting the 256GB variant during its Sizeable Smile Sale, narrowing the price gap between the two models. Beyond the smoother 120Hz display and the addition of a second 48MP ultrawide rear camera, the iPhone 17 boasts an always-on display – a feature absent in both the iPhone 16 and 17e – and an upgraded front-facing Center Stage camera capable of capturing wider selfies.

The iPhone 17 also offers faster charging speeds, supporting 40W wired charging and 25W wireless charging, compared to the 17e’s 20W and 15W respectively. While these differences may seem incremental, they contribute to a more refined and convenient user experience. Faster charging means less time tethered to an outlet, and the always-on display provides at-a-glance access to important information without needing to wake the phone.

Who is the iPhone 17e For?

The iPhone 17e still holds appeal for specific users. Those who prioritize a more lightweight and compact phone – the 17e weighs 169g compared to the 17’s 177g and is slightly smaller in dimensions – may find it a more comfortable fit. Users who don’t heavily rely on their smartphone cameras or those actively seeking to reduce their screen time might also appreciate the iPhone 17e’s more basic feature set.

The 60Hz Bottleneck and Processor Performance

However, the 60Hz display acts as a bottleneck, potentially making the iPhone 17e feel sluggish despite sharing the same A19 processor as the iPhone 17. The smoother scrolling and animations enabled by the 120Hz display on the iPhone 17 contribute significantly to a more responsive and fluid user experience. This difference in perceived performance can be substantial, even for everyday tasks.

Looking Ahead: Software Updates and Long-Term Value

Apple’s commitment to software updates is a crucial factor in the long-term value of its devices. Both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e will undoubtedly receive several years of iOS updates, ensuring continued functionality and security. However, the iPhone 17’s more advanced features, such as the 120Hz display and additional camera, are likely to remain relevant and desirable for a longer period.

With Amazon’s current discount and the iPhone 17e unlikely to see similar price reductions in the near future, the iPhone 17 represents the clear winner for most consumers. The combination of a superior display, more versatile camera system, faster charging, and the always-on display justifies the slightly higher price point, offering a more complete and future-proof smartphone experience.
