iPhone 18 Pro: A20 Chip, Camera Upgrades & Expected Price

March 1, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Seven months remain until its official unveiling, but the iPhone 18 Pro is reportedly in the final stages of development. According to supply chain reports, Apple is preparing to initiate product validation, the step before mass production, suggesting that the design and components are practically finalized. This next-generation iPhone is anticipated to bring significant improvements in performance and camera capabilities, alongside refinements to its existing design language.

A20 Pro Chip and the Move to 2nm Fabrication

The primary innovation expected in the iPhone 18 Pro is the new A20 Pro chip, fabricated using a 2-nanometer process for the first time in an iPhone. This represents a significant leap forward in semiconductor technology. A higher transistor density allows for greater performance with lower power consumption, directly impacting the device’s battery life. Currently, Apple’s A19 and A19 Pro chips utilize a 3nm process; the transition to 2nm promises substantial gains. Wccftech details that TSMC, Apple’s manufacturing partner, has already sold out capacity for 2nm wafer production, with Apple securing over half of the initial supply.

The benefits of moving to a 2nm process extend beyond just performance and efficiency. TSMC’s ‘N2’ node, as it’s called, offers improvements over the previous 3nm ‘N3E’ and ‘N3P’ processes, though specific comparative data is currently limited. The increased density allows for more complex chip designs and improved integration of features like the Neural Engine, which powers on-device machine learning tasks.

Variable Aperture Camera and Enhanced Photography

In the realm of photography, one of the most anticipated changes is the implementation of a variable aperture in the main sensor. This feature would physically adjust the amount of light entering the lens based on the surrounding environment. Currently, iPhones, including the iPhone 17 Pro, have a fixed aperture of f/1.78 on their 48MP main cameras. A variable aperture would allow for greater control over depth of field and low-light performance, bringing iPhone photography closer to the capabilities of DSLR cameras. Tom’s Guide notes this feature may initially be exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Apple is also reportedly testing a telephoto converter to improve optical zoom without relying on digital cropping. The front-facing camera could see a significant upgrade, potentially increasing from 18MP to 24MP. These enhancements suggest Apple is continuing to prioritize camera capabilities as a key differentiator for its Pro models.

Improved Battery Life and Design Refinements

The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to see improvements in battery life thanks to the more efficient A20 Pro chip. For the Pro Max model, leaks point to a battery capacity ranging from 5,100 to 5,200 mAh. Forbes reports this would allow for intensive use throughout the day without needing to recharge. This increase in capacity will necessitate a slightly thicker device, but the trade-off appears to be worthwhile for many users.

The design is expected to continue the aesthetic established by the iPhone 17 Pro, maintaining the titanium and glass construction used in Apple’s higher-end models. Adjustments are anticipated to include a smaller Dynamic Island, achieved through the integration of some sensors under the display. A new, intense red color option is also rumored to be added to the available finishes.

Pricing and Release Timeline

Apple reportedly aims to maintain a starting price of $1,099 for the 256GB version of the iPhone 18 Pro. However, higher storage capacities (512GB, 1TB, and 2TB) are expected to see price increases. The launch is currently slated for September 2026.

During the same event, Apple is also expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone. More accessible models, such as the iPhone 18 and a potential iPhone 18e, are scheduled for release in early 2027.

What’s Next for the iPhone 18 Family

The coming months will be crucial for Apple as it finalizes the iPhone 18 Pro and prepares for mass production. The focus will be on rigorous testing and validation to ensure the new chip and camera technologies perform as expected. The success of the 2nm A20 Pro will also be closely watched by the industry, as it represents a significant milestone in semiconductor manufacturing. Further details regarding the foldable iPhone and the more affordable iPhone 18 models are expected to emerge closer to their respective release dates. The integration of under-display sensors for the Dynamic Island will also be a key area of development, aiming to minimize the cutout without compromising functionality.
