Jean-Claude Van Damme: Why He Was Fired From ‘Predator’

Jean-Claude Van Damme: Why He Was Fired From ‘Predator’

Twentieth Century Fox

Before Kevin Peter Hall became synonymous with the iconic Predator in John McTiernan’s 1987 film, Jean-Claude Van Damme was initially cast in the role. This casting, and subsequent firing, has become a well-known anecdote in Hollywood lore, fueled by accounts of on-set difficulties even before Van Damme achieved widespread action star fame. The initial vision for the Predator, however, differed significantly from the final creature design audiences know today.

The original Predator suit, as recalled by special effects artists Steve Johnson and Matt Winston in a behind-the-scenes discussion (Stan Winston School), bore little resemblance to the sleek, menacing alien of the finished film. It was described as resembling a large insect, complete with an ant-like head. This design was deemed unsuitable for an R-rated sci-fi action film, appearing more appropriate for a show like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Van Damme reportedly disliked the suit intensely, finding it physically restrictive, aesthetically unappealing, and hindering his breathing due to the limited ventilation provided.

Van Damme’s casting was predicated on his martial arts agility, with the intention of utilizing his skills for the creature’s movements. However, the cumbersome suit rendered this impossible, leading to his dismissal and a redesign of the costume. This initial iteration of the Predator was scrapped after test footage revealed its shortcomings.

Conflicting Accounts of Van Damme’s Departure

Accounts from those involved in the production of “Predator” offer varying perspectives on Van Damme’s departure. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter in 2019, producer Joel Silver, actor Bill Duke, visual effects supervisor Joel Hynek, and stunt coordinator Craig Baxley each have slightly different recollections. Some suggest Van Damme exhibited a difficult attitude, believing the role was intended to showcase his kickboxing abilities. Others claim he repeatedly fainted during filming due to the suit’s heat in the Mexican jungle, leading to his dismissal after a few weeks. A further account alleges that Van Damme became agitated when presented with the prosthetic head, removing it and damaging it in the process.

Van Damme’s exit proved beneficial for his career. He quickly secured the lead role in 1989’s “Kickboxer,” which propelled him to action movie stardom. With the Predator suit redesigned and a new performer taking on the role, “Predator” achieved box office success, grossing over $59 million worldwide on a $15 million budget (Box Office Mojo). The film has since become a cornerstone of the sci-fi action genre, and the outcome proved positive for all parties involved – a relatively uncommon occurrence in the film industry.

The story of Van Damme’s brief stint as the Predator serves as a reminder of the often-chaotic and unpredictable nature of film production. The initial concept for the creature, the challenges of practical effects, and the clashing personalities all contributed to a behind-the-scenes narrative as compelling as the film itself. The final product, however, stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of the crew and the enduring appeal of a well-executed sci-fi action thriller.
