Lego F1 McLaren MCL39 Review: A Stunning Technic Build

March 21, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

As a fan of both Formula One and Lego, the increasing collaboration between the two brands has been a welcome sight. From full-size Lego cars appearing at the Miami Grand Prix to subtle nods like Lego-block brake markers at the Austrian GP, the partnership has been delightful. And, of course, there’s the growing range of Lego F1 kits – a full grid of 1:24 scale cars, even a model of the Apex GP team car from the recent F1: The Movie, and now, the latest addition: a detailed Lego Technic McLaren MCL39.

The McLaren MCL39 kit, priced at £199.99 in the UK ($229.99 in the US) and released on March 1st, is a significant step up in complexity and realism from previous Lego F1 offerings. Comprising 1,675 pieces and built to a 1:8 scale, it aims to replicate the championship-winning car that secured both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships in 2025 with Lando Norris at the wheel. This isn’t just a static display model; it’s a functional build with moving parts and intricate details designed to capture the essence of modern Formula 1 engineering.

Beyond the Blocks: A Deeper Dive into the Technic Build

Lego’s Technic line is known for its larger scale, higher price point, and intricate builds, and the MCL39 doesn’t disappoint. Having previously built smaller Lego F1 cars – the 1:24 scale 2023 Ferrari and the approximately 1:18 scale 1988 McLaren MP4/4 – I was eager to tackle this more ambitious project. The kit arrived courtesy of Lego, and the sheer number of pieces initially felt daunting. But, the instructions are, as always with Lego, exceptionally clear and well-organized. The ten bags of components are logically labeled, making the build process manageable.

The assembly process is divided into 546 steps across 362 pages, which might seem intimidating. But the steps themselves aren’t overly complex, and while I occasionally needed to double-check my work, the overall experience was smooth. Sorting the smaller components from each bag into separate containers is highly recommended, especially if you have limited workspace. The build begins with the core chassis and quickly moves onto the suspension and power unit – areas where the kit truly shines.

The suspension system incorporates springs to provide independent movement, mirroring the push-rod and pull-rod setup found in real F1 cars. The resulting feel and functionality are remarkably satisfying. Similarly, the engine, complete with six moving cylinders and a rotating rear axle, adds a dynamic element to the model. A lever beneath the engine cover allows you to shift between low and high gear, altering the speed of the engine relative to the wheels – a clever touch, even if it’s more for demonstration than practical use.

Details and Accuracy: Where the MCL39 Excels

The attention to detail is impressive. The application of stickers is crucial for recreating the authentic McLaren livery, and the kit provides a comprehensive set to achieve this. While the model isn’t aiming for the hyper-realism of a handcrafted Amalgam or Pocher model, it strikes a compelling balance between Lego’s signature aesthetic and accurate representation. As T3 reports, the collaboration between Lego and Formula 1 has extended beyond just model kits, with drivable full-size Lego cars appearing at the Miami Grand Prix in 2025.

However, the kit isn’t without its minor shortcomings. The gaps beneath the side pods are noticeable, and the rear complete could benefit from a slightly tidier design. A long-standing issue with Lego Technic F1 models persists: the front and rear tires are the same width, which isn’t accurate to the real cars. The smaller, more affordable Lego Speed Champions kits correctly depict this detail, raising the question of why it hasn’t been addressed in the more expensive Technic models.

Beyond the Build: Display and Collectibility

Despite these minor flaws, the Lego Technic McLaren MCL39 is a fantastic kit that offers a rewarding building experience and a striking display piece. It’s perfect for displaying on its own, alongside other Lego F1 models, or as part of a larger collection representing the hybrid-era of Formula 1. Formula 1’s official website details the innovative drivers’ parade at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, where drivers piloted full-scale, drivable Lego F1 cars.

The kit’s functionality – the working suspension, engine, and gearbox – adds an extra layer of engagement. The DRS flap, linked to the gear selector, is a particularly clever touch, even if it’s not entirely representative of the real system. The overall build quality is excellent, and the finished model feels robust and substantial.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Lego and F1

The success of the Lego Technic McLaren MCL39, following on from previous F1 models like the Ferrari and Red Bull, suggests a continued and fruitful partnership between Lego and Formula 1. The 2025 Miami Grand Prix, as highlighted in a YouTube video, showcased the excitement surrounding this collaboration, with Lego-themed activities and experiences for fans of all ages.

What comes next for Lego and F1? We can anticipate further collaborations, potentially including more detailed models of iconic cars from F1 history, expanded ranges of Speed Champions kits, and innovative experiences at Grand Prix events. The potential for integrating digital elements, such as augmented reality or interactive apps, could also enhance the Lego F1 experience in the future. The ongoing development of Lego Technic kits, with their increasing complexity and realism, promises to deliver even more immersive and engaging builds for Formula 1 enthusiasts.
