Marathon: Deluxe Edition Glitch Lets Players Max Out Season 1 Reward Pass Quickly

Marathon: Deluxe Edition Glitch Lets Players Max Out Season 1 Reward Pass Quickly

March 6, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Marathon, Bungie’s recently released sci-fi extraction shooter, is experiencing a curious launch issue: players who purchased the Deluxe Edition are discovering an exploit that allows them to rapidly, and unintentionally, max out their Season One reward pass. The bug, first reported by players on March 5th, 2026, centers around the “Silk” in-game currency and a system overflow that’s letting Deluxe Edition owners bypass the intended progression path.

How the Silk Exploit Works

The core of the issue lies with the 200 Silk granted to those who purchased the Marathon Deluxe Edition. Silk is the primary currency used to unlock tiers within the game’s seasonal reward passes. The game has a cap of 140 Silk that can be actively used at any given time. However, the game’s design includes a system where excess Silk doesn’t simply disappear; it’s meant to be held in reserve.

Players quickly discovered that restarting the game after spending 140 Silk would trigger the system to re-grant the full 200 Silk allocation from the Deluxe Edition. This effectively duplicates the currency, allowing players to repeatedly spend 140 Silk, restart, and receive another 200, bypassing the normal grind for Silk through gameplay. A post on X (formerly Twitter) by user @gmeinersYT demonstrates the process, outlining the steps: spend Silk up to the cap, restart the game, and repeat.

Deluxe Edition Specificity and Player Reaction

Crucially, the exploit appears to be limited to Deluxe Edition owners. What we have is as the exploit relies on the initial grant of 200 Silk that comes with the more expensive version of the game. Players who purchased the standard edition of Marathon do not have this initial surplus to exploit.

The discovery has sparked debate within the Marathon community. A discussion on the r/Marathon subreddit highlights differing opinions on whether the exploit constitutes cheating. Some players argue that it undermines the intended progression system and provides an unfair advantage in terms of cosmetic unlocks. Others view it as a harmless bug that doesn’t impact core gameplay mechanics, as Silk doesn’t confer any competitive advantage.

Bungie’s Stance on Cheating and Potential Rollbacks

Bungie has previously taken a firm stance against cheating in its games. The developer recently issued a statement outlining a “no second chances” policy for cheaters, promising permanent bans for those found to be violating the game’s terms of service.

However, the question remains whether exploiting a bug like this falls under the same category as using traditional cheating methods like wallhacks or aimbots. The likely outcome, based on Bungie’s past behavior, is a rollback of the reward pass progress for affected players. This isn’t unprecedented; Bungie famously implemented a full character rollback in Destiny 2 during the Witch Queen expansion to address a bug that corrupted character data. That incident, as reported by PC Gamer, involved a far more severe disruption to the user experience than simply unlocking cosmetic items early.

Broader Launch Issues and Bungie’s Response

The Silk exploit isn’t the only issue Marathon has faced since its release. Players initially experienced problems redeeming their Deluxe Edition bonuses on Steam, a problem that was quickly resolved. Twitch drops for exclusive cosmetics were not functioning correctly, and some players reported issues with the proper crediting of Lux (premium currency).

These initial hiccups highlight the challenges of launching a new online game, particularly one with complex systems like seasonal reward passes and integrated Twitch drops. Bungie has acknowledged the issues and is working to address them. Eurogamer has reached out to Bungie for comment on the Silk exploit and the other launch day problems.

What’s Next for Marathon and the Silk Exploit

The most immediate step is for Bungie to address the Silk exploit. A patch is likely to be deployed to fix the system overflow that allows for the duplication of currency. Following the patch, Bungie will likely assess the extent to which the exploit was used and determine the appropriate course of action. A rollback of reward pass progress for affected players seems the most probable outcome, though the specifics will depend on the severity of the issue and the number of players impacted.

Beyond the immediate fix, Bungie will need to continue monitoring the game for other bugs and exploits. The launch of Marathon has been somewhat rocky, but the developer has a track record of supporting its games post-launch and addressing issues as they arise. The long-term success of Marathon will depend on Bungie’s ability to provide a stable and engaging experience for its players.
