Medical Innovation Challenge: Students Present Healthcare Tech Projects | MEDIQ 2024

Medical Innovation Challenge: Students Present Healthcare Tech Projects | MEDIQ 2024

March 26, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

The inaugural Défi MEDIQ, a collaborative challenge uniting medical and engineering students, concluded successfully, showcasing innovative approaches to healthcare challenges. The event, held recently, brought together 54 students and nearly 100 participants overall in what organizers described as an “electrifying” atmosphere. The challenge paired students from clinical and engineering backgrounds to tackle real-world medical problems, culminating in project presentations judged by a panel of physicians, engineers, and medical technology experts.

Bridging Disciplines for Healthcare Innovation

Défi MEDIQ’s core concept centers on the increasing need for interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex healthcare issues. Modern medicine isn’t solely about clinical expertise; it increasingly relies on technological advancements – from sophisticated diagnostic imaging to robotic surgery and data-driven personalized medicine. This requires professionals who can not only understand the medical need but also translate it into engineering solutions, and vice versa. The challenge format directly addresses this need by forcing students from different disciplines to work together, fostering a shared understanding and skillset.

Throughout the day, mentors from both clinical and engineering fields provided guidance to the participating teams. This mentorship component is crucial, offering students access to experienced professionals who can provide insights into the practical application of their ideas. The final stage of the competition involved teams presenting their projects to a judging panel comprised of medical professionals, engineers, and experts in medical technologies. A notable outcome of the event was that every winning team included at least one student from the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal (UdeM). This suggests a strong showing from the medical students and a successful integration of medical perspectives into the engineering-focused solutions.

The Power of Mentorship in Medical and Engineering Fields

The importance of mentorship in both medicine and engineering is well-documented. For medical professionals, particularly those in training or early in their careers, mentorship provides a safe space to reflect, ask questions, and navigate the complexities of the profession. As the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ) notes in their guide to medical mentorship on their website, mentorship allows for “a time to pause, despite a busy schedule, to reflect and take stock.” It’s a chance to share doubts, celebrate successes, and plan for the future.

Similarly, in engineering, mentorship can be invaluable for navigating technical challenges, developing leadership skills, and understanding the ethical implications of technological innovation. The Défi MEDIQ format inherently provides a form of peer mentorship, as students learn from each other’s expertise and perspectives. The presence of established mentors from both fields amplifies this effect, offering guidance based on years of experience.

Expanding Access to Medical Education and Opportunities

The need for diverse perspectives and increased access to medical education is a growing concern. Programs like Medical Mentor’s Rising Doctors Program highlight this, specifically targeting low-income and underrepresented students. This program offers virtual advisory services to help students improve their medical school applications. The focus on inclusivity is critical, as a diverse medical workforce is better equipped to address the healthcare needs of a diverse population.

Whereas Défi MEDIQ doesn’t explicitly focus on socioeconomic factors in its participant selection, the emphasis on collaboration and innovation could indirectly contribute to a more inclusive healthcare landscape. By bringing together students from different backgrounds and disciplines, the challenge fosters a broader understanding of healthcare challenges and potential solutions.

Building on Success: The Future of Défi MEDIQ

Given the success of the inaugural event, organizers are already planning a second edition of Défi MEDIQ for 2027. They are actively seeking new partnerships and motivated individuals to join the effort. This indicates a strong commitment to building a sustainable platform for interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare innovation. The challenge’s format – combining mentorship, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving – appears to be a winning formula for fostering the next generation of healthcare leaders.

What’s Next for the Challenge?

The organizers are currently focused on securing funding and expanding the scope of the challenge for the 2027 edition. This includes exploring opportunities to involve more universities and potentially expanding the range of healthcare challenges addressed. A key area of focus will likely be on refining the mentorship program to ensure that students receive the most effective guidance and support. The long-term goal is to establish Défi MEDIQ as a leading platform for interdisciplinary healthcare innovation in Canada, and potentially beyond.
