Microsoft Achieves 100% Renewable Energy: Powers Global Operations with 40GW Clean Energy

March 9, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Microsoft has achieved a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability: the company now matches 100% of its annual global electricity consumption with renewable energy. This achievement, reached in 2025, marks a key step toward Microsoft’s ambitious goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030 – a pledge first announced in 2020. The progress underscores the growing feasibility of large-scale corporate investment in clean energy and its potential to drive broader innovation in the power sector.

A Decade of Investment: 40 Gigawatts of Renewable Energy

Microsoft’s journey began in 2013 with a modest 110 megawatt (MW) power purchase agreement (PPA) in Texas. This initial step demonstrated the potential for corporate procurement to scale clean energy adoption. Since then, the company has evolved into one of the world’s largest clean energy purchasers, contracting for a total of 40 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy across 26 countries, working with over 95 utilities and developers. To position this into perspective, 40 GW is enough energy to power approximately 10 million US homes, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Equivalency Calculator.

As of December 31, 2025, 19 GW of this contracted renewable energy is already online, delivering clean power to the grid, with the remaining capacity slated to come online over the next five years. This procurement has already reduced Microsoft’s reported Scope 2 carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 25 million tons and mobilized billions of dollars in private investment in the regions where the company operates.

Catalyzing Market Investment Through Repeatable Models

Microsoft’s approach extends beyond simply purchasing renewable energy. The company has actively pioneered technical and commercial practices to create bankable, repeatable, and scalable procurement tools for different energy markets. Navigating the complexities of global power market designs requires a balance of cost, speed, and project sizing, and Microsoft’s experience has helped to demonstrate how corporate demand can drive a more affordable and sustainable power system.

This work has been done in collaboration with a broad coalition of partners. According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, over 200 global corporations have collectively purchased nearly 200 GW of clean energy since 2008. Microsoft actively collaborates with other clean energy buyers, utilities, manufacturers, financiers, and developers to reduce transaction costs, expand developer access to financing, and streamline procurement processes. This collaborative approach is expected to continue to facilitate significant investment in infrastructure and job creation.

Scaling Partnerships to Scale Infrastructure

A key element of Microsoft’s success has been its focus on building trusted partnerships with energy suppliers. The company has sourced clean energy through requests for proposal, bilateral engagements, and clean tariffs, evaluating over 5,000 carbon-free energy projects worldwide. Currently, Microsoft has six energy company partners with whom it has contracted over 1 GW of renewable energy capacity each, and more than 20 partners with at least five separate renewable energy projects.

This commitment to long-term partnerships is exemplified by Microsoft’s 10.5 GW framework agreement with Brookfield, a deal that provides a clear demand signal to the market, enabling developers to secure funding, strengthen supply chains, and construct new energy infrastructure.

Putting Communities First

Microsoft recognizes the importance of ensuring that its renewable energy procurement benefits the communities where it operates. Through partnerships with developers and nonprofit organizations, the company has embedded community-driven benefits into its energy portfolio, including infrastructure improvements, economic inclusion initiatives, and support for local organizations.

Examples of this commitment include a 500 MW PPA with Sol Systems, which provided local training and jobs, and a 250 MW PPA with Volt Energy Utility, which offered grants to community nonprofits and supported habitat restoration. Microsoft has likewise invested in distributed solar projects, bringing clean energy directly to hundreds of communities. Further details on these initiatives can be found in a dedicated Microsoft whitepaper.

Innovation Unlocks New Markets and Pathways

Microsoft’s procurement efforts have also played a role in driving technical, commercial, and regulatory innovation. The company’s commercial efforts have helped lower barriers to entry into new markets and expand access to multi-technology contracts that accelerate decarbonization. In Japan, Microsoft signed one of the first corporate PPAs in the country’s restructured power market, paving the way for over 2 GW of corporate procurement since 2024, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

In India, Microsoft purchased a combined 437 MW solar/wind hybrid offtake from Renew, supporting energy access and rural electrification. Closer to home, Microsoft’s datacenters in Douglas County, Washington, are supplied by 100% carbon-free energy, leveraging a combination of new wind power and hydropower storage.

Looking Ahead: Beyond Renewable Energy

As the world electrifies, the demand for affordable, reliable, and clean electricity will continue to rise. Microsoft recognizes that a balanced, “all-of-the-above” decarbonization strategy is needed to meet global economic growth and environmental goals. This includes exploring a broader range of carbon-free energy technologies, such as nuclear energy, next-generation grid infrastructure, and carbon capture technology.

Microsoft has already taken initial steps in this direction, partnering with Helion and Constellation Energy on a 50 MW fusion project in Washington state and working with Constellation to restart the 835 MW Crane Clean Energy Center in Pennsylvania. The company’s Climate Innovation Fund has allocated $806 million to 67 investees, with 38% directed toward Energy Systems.

Microsoft is also leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to design, permit, and deploy new power technologies, collaborating with Idaho National Laboratory and the Midcontinental Independent System Operator to streamline processes and improve grid efficiency.

As Microsoft progresses toward its 2030 carbon negative goal, the company will continue to advocate for evolving standards and frameworks to ensure accurate carbon accounting and real-world emissions reductions. The commitment remains a call to action for Microsoft, its customers, and the broader technology sector to invest in a sustainable power system.

Melanie Nakagawa, Microsoft’s Chief Sustainability Officer, leads the company’s targets to be carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste by 2030. Noelle Walsh, President of Cloud Operations + Innovation at Microsoft, oversees the company’s physical cloud infrastructure and operations, with a focus on sustainability.
