Nikon Zf: New Timestamp Feature Spotted at CP+ 2026
Nikon is quietly teasing a feature that will likely appeal to photographers with a fondness for the early 2000s: the ability to add a timestamp directly onto images. Spotted at the CP+ 2026 show, the function was demonstrated on a Nikon Zf camera, offering a nostalgic touch for those who remember the days of dedicated digital cameras often displaying the date and time a photo was taken.
A Subtle Addition
CP+ 2026 saw a wide range of announcements, varying considerably in scope, with some passing almost unnoticed. The modern functionality for the Nikon Zf, potentially arriving via a firmware update, falls into the latter category, similar to the attention garnered by the brightly colored ZR “Bayhem” model.
The timestamp feature, observed on a prototype unit, allows users to “print” the date and time of capture directly onto JPEG images, positioned in the bottom right corner. On the prototype, the date appeared in a reddish-orange hue. Switching to Monochrome mode changed the timestamp’s display to white.
While seemingly a minor addition, the feature offers a playful option for photographers looking to evoke a retro aesthetic. It’s a deliberate nod to the visual language of early digital photography, when displaying the capture date was a common practice.
Combining this with the Zf’s film grain mode could further enhance the retro feel, creating images reminiscent of point-and-shoot cameras from the early 2000s. A playful, if ultimately non-essential, addition.
Availability and Future Development
Nikon representatives indicated that this feature is not currently slated for inclusion in a future firmware update for the Zf. The function wasn’t even accessible through the camera’s menu on the prototype unit. This suggests Nikon is primarily gathering user feedback before committing to development – a strategy reminiscent of the cat meow shutter sound Nikon showcased at CP+ 2022. We will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as they turn into available.
