Overthrown 1.0 Release Date: Steam, Xbox & PlayStation Launch Confirmed

Overthrown 1.0 Release Date: Steam, Xbox & PlayStation Launch Confirmed

March 12, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Maximum Entertainment has confirmed that Overthrown, the chaotic open-world city builder developed by Brimstone, will officially launch in its 1.0 version on March 18th, 2026. The full release will be available on PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, bringing with it the game’s most substantial content update to date: the “Airship Update.” Overthrown has been in Early Access since December 2024, and this launch marks a significant milestone for the title.

A Kingdom Built on Chaos and Physics

Overthrown distinguishes itself within the city-building genre through its emphasis on physics-based destruction and manipulation. Players assume the role of a monarch wielding an ancient, soul-stealing crown imbued with magical abilities. This isn’t a game about carefully planned urban layouts; it’s about leveraging the power to lift, throw, and generally wreak havoc with nearly everything in the game world – buildings, trees, and even citizens – to establish and defend a kingdom in a perilous wilderness. The game supports both single-player and cooperative gameplay for up to six players, adding another layer of emergent chaos.

The Airship Update: Taking the Fight to the Skies

The Airship Update, launching alongside the 1.0 release, dramatically expands the strategic possibilities within Overthrown. Players can now construct and command their own airships, enabling aerial assaults on outlaw camps and fundamentally altering the dynamics of warfare. However, this new power comes at a cost. Airships require significant mana upkeep, forcing players to carefully balance expansion with resource management. Opponents will also deploy their own airships, escalating the conflict into a full-blown aerial arms race. To counter these airborne threats, the update introduces the Cannon Tower, a new defensive structure capable of engaging both ground and air units.

Beyond airships, the Airship Update also introduces deadlier enemies and new regions to explore. Outlaw camps are becoming more formidable, presenting a greater challenge to players. The update also includes three new levels, each centered around distinct ecosystems, offering varied environments and strategic considerations.

Brimstone: An International Indie Studio

The development of Overthrown is led by Brimstone, an internationally distributed independent studio founded in Sweden. The team is comprised of developers spread across more than ten countries in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Brimstone focuses on creating chaotic and innovative gaming experiences, and Overthrown is a prime example of their design philosophy. You can find more information about the studio at their official website.

Coastal Update Paved the Way for 1.0

The launch of the 1.0 version follows a period of consistent updates during Early Access. Just last month, the Coastal Update added a wealth of new features, including aquatic creatures, a fishing boat, and a suite of new weapons. This update also refined melee combat with a lock-on camera system for improved fluidity and enemy tracking. Players gained new stealth and crafting options thanks to coastal vegetation like seaweed, kelp, cattails, and tall grass, and two new diverse levels were added: Rolling Hills and Archipelago. These additions demonstrate Brimstone’s commitment to expanding and refining the Overthrown experience based on player feedback.

Maximum Entertainment’s Publishing Partnership

Maximum Entertainment partnered with Brimstone to bring Overthrown to market across PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. This partnership, announced in July 2024, highlights Maximum Entertainment’s strategy of supporting and publishing promising independent titles. The company also recently announced the launch of Winx Club: The Magic is Back, further demonstrating their diverse portfolio.

What’s Next for Overthrown?

With the 1.0 launch and the Airship Update, Overthrown enters a new phase of development. Brimstone will likely continue to monitor player feedback and address any remaining bugs or balance issues. The studio has indicated that further content updates are planned, though specific details remain unconfirmed.
