PS5 DualSense Stick Drift Fix: TMR & Hall Effect Modules Explained

Like many modern game controllers, the PlayStation 5’s DualSense isn’t immune to a frustrating issue: stick drift. While Sony has attempted to address the problem through multiple firmware updates, a fundamental limitation of the traditional analog stick modules remains. Although, a growing number of users are discovering that a full controller replacement isn’t always necessary. Affordable stick module kits, featuring either TMR or Hall-effect technology, offer a direct fix – and, for some, even improve upon the original feel of the controller.

Why Does Stick Drift Happen?

Stick drift isn’t a software glitch; it’s a mechanical problem. Most controllers, including the PlayStation 5 DualSense, rely on potentiometers to translate stick movement into in-game action. These potentiometers measure position through physical contact between a carbon track and a metal wiper. Over time, this constant friction causes wear on the carbon track. As the material degrades, the electrical signal becomes unstable, and even minor inconsistencies can register as unintended movement – resulting in drift.

While calibration tools can temporarily compensate for minor inconsistencies by adjusting dead zones or recalibrating the neutral position, they don’t address the underlying physical wear. The issue tends to recur, making a more permanent solution appealing.

How TMR or Hall-Effect Modules Change the Equation

TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) and Hall-effect modules offer a fundamentally different approach to detecting stick movement. Instead of relying on physical contact, they utilize magnetic sensing. These modules don’t have metal wipers or carbon tracks; instead, they determine the position of the sticks using a magnetic field.

Because there’s no direct contact, there’s significantly less mechanical wear on electrical components over time. This directly addresses the root cause of stick drift. The lack of friction results in a more stable signal, even after prolonged use. While not indestructible, these modules eliminate the most common failure point in traditional analog sticks.

Magnetic Sensing Eliminates Contact-Based Wear

Beyond simply eliminating drift, magnetic modules can also improve controller responsiveness, and centering. TMR and Hall-effect modules tend to hold a more accurate neutral position, reducing micro-jitters – those subtle, unwanted movements that can affect precision. This results in smoother, more predictable stick action, particularly beneficial in fast-paced games like first-person shooters and platformers.

TMR modules also offer a slight power efficiency advantage, which, while small, can be a plus for wireless controllers like the DualSense. As How-To Geek explains, TMR technology generally consumes less power than Hall-effect sensors.

This PS5 DualSense Controller Mod Isn’t For Everyone

Replacing the analog modules in a DualSense controller isn’t a plug-and-play process. The stock modules are soldered directly onto the printed circuit board (PCB), requiring desoldering before installation. This makes the mod more suitable for those with experience in DIY electronics and soldering.

The process generally involves heating and removing the solder from each stick, clearing the through-holes, aligning the new module, and carefully soldering it into place. A quality soldering iron and desoldering tools (pump or wick) are essential. It’s also important to note that opening the controller and modifying the PCB will void any remaining warranty.

Kits containing the necessary TMR or Hall-effect modules are readily available online, often costing between $20 and $40. However, the cost of tools, if you don’t already have them, should also be factored in.

Beyond the Fix: The DualSense and Controller Innovation

The popularity of this mod highlights a broader trend in the gaming industry: a growing demand for more durable and reliable controllers. The DualSense, with its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, represents a significant leap forward in controller technology. However, the persistence of stick drift underscores the challenges of balancing innovation with long-term reliability.

Sony has acknowledged the issue and continues to investigate potential solutions. As noted on Amazon, the DualSense controller aims to deliver a more immersive gaming experience, but the underlying hardware limitations remain a concern for many users.

What Comes Next?

The DIY fix using TMR or Hall-effect modules is currently the most effective solution for stick drift on the DualSense. However, the long-term future likely lies in controller manufacturers adopting these more durable technologies as standard. Further research and development into alternative analog stick technologies could also lead to even more reliable and precise control schemes. For now, the modding community continues to refine the process, sharing tips and tutorials to create the fix more accessible to a wider audience. The ongoing discussion around controller durability also puts pressure on manufacturers to prioritize longevity in future designs.
