Finding a Safe Ride: Consumer Reports’ Top Compact SUV Picks for 2026

When choosing a modern vehicle, safety consistently ranks as a top priority for drivers. Beyond budget, fuel efficiency, and driving experience, the ability of a vehicle to protect its occupants is paramount. Consumer Reports has long been a trusted source for vehicle safety assessments, and their recently published 2026 ratings for small SUVs offer valuable guidance for car shoppers. The organization’s evaluations consider crash test data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Consumer Reports’ own testing of braking and handling, and the availability of standard safety technologies like blind spot detection and rear cross traffic warnings. Finding a vehicle that excels in these areas can significantly minimize risk on the road. The popularity of compact SUVs makes this a particularly significant category to assess, and Consumer Reports has identified five models that stand out for their safety performance.

Hyundai Tucson: A Popular Choice with Strong Safety Scores

The Hyundai Tucson has seen a surge in popularity, ranking as the thirteenth best-selling vehicle in the United States in 2025. This momentum is expected to continue into 2026, bolstered by positive reviews and strong safety ratings. Both the gas-powered and hybrid versions of the 2026 Tucson rank among the top nine compact SUVs in Consumer Reports’ overall rankings. SlashGear’s review highlighted the Tucson Hybrid as potentially the best-reviewed crossover hybrid SUV of 2025.

The Tucson earns its high safety marks by including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection (functioning at speeds of 55 mph or higher) and both blind spot and rear cross traffic warnings as standard features across all trims. It also meets both federal safety requirements and Consumer Reports’ internal safety standards. While reliability scores, particularly for the hybrid model, aren’t quite as strong as some competitors, the Tucson remains a safe and well-regarded option. It’s worth noting, however, that the 2026 Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid received a slightly lower safety score due to a lack of data from IIHS front and side crash tests. Without this crucial data, a complete safety assessment isn’t possible, even though it performs well in other areas.

Mazda CX-50: Safety Standard Across the Lineup

The Mazda CX-50, while not as widely popular as the Tucson, also achieves top safety ratings from Consumer Reports. Both the standard gas-powered and hybrid versions of the 2026 CX-50 pass all of the organization’s safety tests, boasting standard technological safety features and meeting all federal and Consumer Reports requirements. Unlike the Tucson, Mazda doesn’t offer a plug-in hybrid version of the CX-50, meaning all variations achieve the same high safety rating. Mazda’s overall commitment to safety has even led to the brand being recognized by Consumer Reports as one of the safest car brands overall.

While drivers generally express satisfaction with the Mazda CX-50, according to SlashGear, owner satisfaction doesn’t quite match the safety performance. Both the hybrid and non-hybrid versions of the CX-50 have below-average reliability ratings, contributing to lower overall owner scores. Five other compact SUVs tested by Consumer Reports scored lower on reliability. However, for buyers prioritizing safety and attracted by the $29,900 starting price (plus a $1,495 destination fee), the 2026 Mazda CX-50 presents a compelling option.

Subaru Forester Hybrid: Leading the Pack in Overall Performance

The Subaru Forester Hybrid stands out as one of Consumer Reports’ safest compact SUVs. Subaru, generally recognized as a highly reliable brand, as noted by SlashGear, consistently performs well in safety assessments. The 2026 Forester Hybrid not only meets all of Consumer Reports’ safety requirements but also achieves the highest overall score among compact SUVs, factoring in reliability, road testing, and owner satisfaction.

The difference between the hybrid and non-hybrid Forester lies in standard safety features. While the gas-powered Forester can achieve the same safety rating with optional upgrades, the hybrid model includes blind spot and rear cross traffic warnings as standard equipment. This distinction is crucial in Consumer Reports’ overall assessment, as it evaluates vehicles based on their standard features. Adding these features to a gas-powered Forester will bring it up to par, but the hybrid model offers this safety net right from the base trim.

Acura ADX: Luxury with a Safety Focus

The 2026 Acura ADX demonstrates that luxury and safety can coexist. As the compact SUV offering from Honda’s luxury brand, the ADX achieves top safety ratings from Consumer Reports while maintaining a relatively affordable price point for the luxury segment, starting at $35,000 plus a $1,450 destination and handling fee. It includes all essential technological safety features as standard, such as blind spot, pedestrian, and rear cross traffic warnings, and successfully passes all safety tests conducted by both Consumer Reports and the IIHS. The ADX is available only with a traditional gasoline engine, simplifying the safety assessment.

However, Acura’s larger and more expensive RDX model did not achieve the same safety ratings. Similar to the Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid, the RDX lacks data from IIHS front crash tests, preventing a complete safety evaluation. The Acura ADX, having passed this critical test, offers a more confident safety profile for buyers seeking a blend of luxury and peace of mind.

Lexus NX: Top Tier Luxury and Safety

Rounding out the list is the 2026 Lexus NX, which Consumer Reports considers the best overall luxury compact SUV. The NX Hybrid leads the pack, closely followed by the standard gas-powered version. Both powertrains receive Consumer Reports’ safety stamp of approval, featuring standard safety technologies and successful performance in crash and road tests. The Lexus NX line also boasts strong reliability ratings, further enhancing buyer confidence.

The Lexus NX is also available as a plug-in hybrid, but, mirroring the situation with the Hyundai Tucson and Acura RDX, the plug-in hybrid model doesn’t receive the highest possible safety rating from Consumer Reports due to the absence of moderate overlap front crash test data from the IIHS. While it meets all other criteria, this missing data prevents a complete assessment. For the highest level of certainty, Consumer Reports recommends opting for the standard or hybrid NX models.

Staying Informed and Prioritizing Safety

Choosing a safe vehicle is a critical decision for any car buyer. Consumer Reports’ 2026 ratings provide a valuable starting point, but it’s essential to consider individual needs and priorities. Resources like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (FuelEconomy.gov) offer additional information on vehicle safety and fuel efficiency. A well-informed decision, based on thorough research and a clear understanding of safety features, can help drivers minimize risk and enjoy a safer driving experience. As testing methodologies evolve and new vehicles enter the market, staying updated on the latest safety assessments is an ongoing process.
