Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold Discontinued: ,900 Phone Ends Production

Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold Discontinued: $2,900 Phone Ends Production

March 18, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Samsung’s ambitious foray into trifold smartphone technology appears to be over, at least for now. The company is winding down sales of the Galaxy Z TriFold, a device that debuted to considerable attention but at a steep $2,899 price point, after less than three months on the market. While the phone proved popular with early adopters in the US and South Korea, Samsung framed the limited release as a showcase of its design and engineering capabilities rather than a mass-market product push.

The Galaxy Z TriFold, announced on December 1, 2025, and released in the US on January 30, 2026, features a unique design with a 6.5-inch cover screen that unfolds into a 10-inch main display using two hinges. This form factor, while innovative, also contributed to a somewhat bulky profile – 12.9mm thick when closed, as noted in CNET’s review. The decision to halt sales comes after a limited initial run, with reports suggesting only 3,000 units were sold on each of two days in South Korea following its December 12th launch, according to the South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo.

A Showcase of Engineering, Not a Mass-Market Device

Samsung’s strategy with the TriFold wasn’t necessarily about volume sales. A company spokesperson, as reported by Bloomberg, indicated the intention was to gauge customer interest and demonstrate Samsung’s technical prowess. The phone is being phased out starting with its home market of South Korea, with remaining US inventory being sold through the Samsung website and its seven Experience Stores nationwide. As of today, the Samsung website does not list the TriFold for sale, though some units were reportedly still available at Experience Stores in Frisco, Texas, and Queens, New York, in recent days, according to user reports on the Galaxy Z TriFold subreddit.

The Broader Context of Foldable Technology

Despite the TriFold’s short lifespan, industry analysts observe potential in the trifold form factor. Francisco Jeronimo, vice president of client devices at IDC, suggests the demand for the Galaxy Z TriFold indicates “a segment with clear long-term potential.” He points to Huawei’s success with its own trifold devices, noting that the company has sold 1.2 million units, generating approximately $3.2 billion in revenue. This suggests a growing, albeit niche, consumer appetite for larger, multi-fold displays. Jeronimo frames the Samsung TriFold as part of a broader experimentation strategy in foldable and hybrid device design.

The high cost of components likely played a role in the decision to discontinue the TriFold. According to market research firm TrendForce, prices for key components like DRAM, NAND flash, and application processors have surged this year, partly due to increased demand from the artificial intelligence sector. These components are critical for the functionality of advanced smartphones like the TriFold, and rising costs would make mass production economically challenging.

What Makes a Trifold Different?

The core innovation of the Galaxy Z TriFold lies in its ability to unfold into a larger, tablet-like display. Traditional foldable phones, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, typically unfold along a single hinge, creating a larger screen but maintaining a relatively narrow aspect ratio. The TriFold, with its two hinges, expands both the screen size and the aspect ratio, offering a more immersive experience for multitasking, media consumption, and creative work. This is achieved through a complex mechanical design that requires precise engineering and durable materials. The hinges themselves are a significant engineering challenge, needing to withstand repeated folding and unfolding without failure.

User Experience and Practicality

CNET’s Abrar Al-Heeti, who spent two weeks testing the device, described the TriFold as “versatile, innovative and practical,” but ultimately acknowledged it wasn’t “for everyone.” The large screen proved useful for multitasking and media consumption, effectively doubling as a workstation or tablet. However, the high price tag and somewhat bulky form factor limited its appeal to a niche audience. The device sold out quickly on its first day in the US, demonstrating initial interest, but the limited production run suggests Samsung wasn’t aiming for widespread adoption.

The Future of Trifold Devices

Whether Samsung will revisit the trifold design remains uncertain. Won-Joon Choi, chief operating officer of Samsung’s Mobile Experience Business, stated last month that the company hadn’t yet decided if it would bring the device – or an updated version – to a wider market. For those interested in exploring alternative trifold options, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate (not available in the US) and Tecno’s Phantom Ultimate G, showcased as a concept at MWC 2026, offer potential alternatives.

The discontinuation of the Galaxy Z TriFold doesn’t necessarily signal the end of trifold technology. It may simply represent a strategic pause, allowing Samsung to refine the design, reduce production costs, and better assess market demand. The underlying technology and the potential benefits of a larger, more versatile display remain compelling, and it’s likely we’ll see further experimentation in this space in the coming years. The key will be finding a balance between innovation, practicality, and affordability.
