Tonight’s Moon Phase: See What You Can Spot in the Waxing Gibbous Moon | Full Moon Date

If you look up tonight, March 27, 2026, you’ll see more than half of the Moon illuminated – a beautiful sight, and a quality opportunity to observe lunar features. The current phase is Waxing Gibbous, meaning the Moon is growing fuller each night as it orbits Earth. Specifically, approximately 67% of the Moon’s surface will be lit by the sun tonight, according to NASA’s Daily Moon Guide.

What Does a Waxing Gibbous Moon Look Like?

The term “gibbous” refers to a shape that is more than half, but less than fully illuminated. “Waxing” indicates that the illuminated portion is increasing. This phase follows the First Quarter Moon and precedes the Full Moon, which is predicted to occur on April 1st in North America. The Waxing Gibbous phase offers excellent opportunities for observing the Moon, as the long shadows cast by the sunlight highlight craters and mountains.

Lunar Features Visible Tonight

Even without specialized equipment, several prominent features on the Moon are visible to the naked eye during the Waxing Gibbous phase. Tonight, observers can readily identify the Fecunditatis, Crisum, and Vaporum maria – large, dark, basaltic plains formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. These “seas,” as they were historically called, appear as relatively smooth, darker areas on the lunar surface.

For those with binoculars, the detail increases significantly. The Posidonius Crater, a large impact crater located on the eastern limb of the Moon, becomes visible. The Alps Mountains and the Appennine Mountains, rugged ranges that border the maria, also approach into view. These mountain ranges are remnants of the massive impact that created the Imbrium Basin, one of the largest impact structures in the solar system.

Deeper Exploration with a Telescope

A telescope unlocks even more of the Moon’s intricate details. Observers can then discern features like the Rima Ariadaeus, a sinuous, channel-like depression thought to be a collapsed lava tube. The Descartes Highlands, a heavily cratered region explored during the Apollo 16 mission, and the Caucasus Mountains, a prominent range extending along the lunar limb, also become visible.

Understanding Moon Phases: A Celestial Dance

The changing phases of the Moon are a result of its orbit around Earth and the changing angles at which we view the sunlit portion of its surface. The Moon doesn’t produce its own light; we see it by reflected sunlight. NASA explains that the Moon completes one orbit around Earth in roughly 29.5 days, cycling through eight distinct phases. The same side of the Moon always faces Earth – a phenomenon known as synchronous rotation – but as it orbits, the amount of illuminated surface visible to us changes.

These eight phases are:

  • New Moon: The Moon is between Earth and the sun, and the side facing us is not illuminated, making it invisible.
  • Waxing Crescent: A sliver of light appears on the right side (in the Northern Hemisphere).
  • First Quarter: Half of the Moon is illuminated on the right side.
  • Waxing Gibbous: More than half of the Moon is illuminated, but it’s not yet full.
  • Full Moon: The entire face of the Moon is illuminated.
  • Waning Gibbous: The illuminated portion begins to decrease on the right side.
  • Third Quarter (or Last Quarter): Half of the Moon is illuminated on the left side.
  • Waning Crescent: A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before disappearing again.

The Moon’s Orbit and Tidal Effects

The Moon’s gravitational pull is the primary driver of Earth’s tides. The side of Earth closest to the Moon experiences a stronger gravitational force, creating a bulge of water – a high tide. A corresponding bulge occurs on the opposite side of Earth due to inertia. As Earth rotates, different locations pass through these bulges, resulting in the cyclical rise and fall of sea levels. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides detailed information on tides and currents, explaining how lunar phases and the Moon’s position relative to Earth influence tidal patterns.

Future Lunar Exploration

Interest in lunar exploration is experiencing a resurgence. NASA’s Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon by 2026, with the long-term goal of establishing a sustainable lunar presence. The program will involve building a lunar base camp and utilizing lunar resources, such as water ice, to support future missions to Mars.
