Wavegarden & Surf Eye Partner for AI-Powered Surf Coaching & Safety System

Wavegarden & Surf Eye Partner for AI-Powered Surf Coaching & Safety System

March 26, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Wavegarden, a leading name in surf park technology, is deepening its integration with Surf Eye, a provider of AI-powered video analysis systems, to enhance the experience at its wave pool facilities. This collaboration evolves Wavegarden’s CheckMySurf system, aiming to provide surfers with detailed performance feedback and optimize lagoon operations. The move signals a broader industry trend toward leveraging artificial intelligence to improve both the recreational and logistical aspects of wave pool technology.

From Video Capture to Operational Intelligence

The partnership builds upon Wavegarden’s initial development of CheckMySurf, launched in 2023, but which hadn’t seen full deployment across its venues. Instead, facilities had been utilizing systems from Flowstate and Surf Eye. Now, Wavegarden is officially adopting Surf Eye’s technology, integrating it directly into the wave generator itself. This isn’t simply about recording rides; it’s about creating a connected ecosystem where data informs both the surfer’s experience and the lagoon’s performance.

At the core of the system is a network of 6K cinema-grade cameras positioned across the Reef and Bay areas of the wave pool. These cameras automatically track every surfer and every ride from multiple angles, using intelligent zooming to capture detailed footage. This footage isn’t just for post-ride review; it’s too displayed on screens near the take-off area, providing real-time replays, session data – including take-off points and wave characteristics – safety information, and even live competition scoring.

Surfers gain access to their ride videos instantly via a bespoke web platform, allowing for immediate analysis and sharing. The system also extends the experience to clubhouse areas, displaying content on screens in restaurants and bars, potentially driving revenue through increased engagement.

How the System Works: A ‘Brain’ for the Lagoon

The key innovation lies in the native integration of Surf Eye’s AI with the Wavegarden wave generator. This connection allows the system to move beyond simple video capture and into operational support. According to a press release, the system can contribute to more efficient wave generation and adapt wave delivery based on surfer performance.

This means the system can actively monitor the lagoon, detect potential incidents, and even alert staff or stop the machine if necessary. The integration provides continuous monitoring, contributing to safety and optimized energy efficiency. Essentially, the system acts as a central “brain” for the lagoon, managing and enhancing every aspect of its operation.

Surf Eye’s CEO and Founder, Alessandro Fracassi, stated that the system was created to help surfers improve faster and capture those special wave pool moments. “Integrating our AI technology with Wavegarden’s machines allows us to bring that mission to millions of surfers worldwide.”

The Broader Landscape of AI in Surf Parks

The adoption of AI-powered video systems is becoming increasingly common in surf parks. These systems offer a valuable souvenir for wave pool patrons, allowing them to share their experiences on social media. Beyond the social aspect, the technology provides valuable data for coaching, guest engagement, and operational monitoring.

The systems typically employ multi-camera networks and computer vision software to automatically record and track surfers, generate ride clips, and deliver video through web or mobile platforms. They also provide on-site replay screens, session data, and safety information, and can even produce performance analysis based on movement tracking.

Currently, Surf Eye systems are installed at Wavegarden’s Alaïa Bay and Praia da Grama surf parks. The Flowstate system can be found at Coves in Lost Shore, Virginia Beach, The Wave Bristol, as well as URBNSURF Melbourne and URBNSURF Sydney. This demonstrates a diverse adoption of AI video technology across the wave pool industry.

What Comes Next: Continuous Evolution and Integration

Wavegarden plans to include the CheckMySurf | Surf Eye system as standard in all new projects and will continuously update the system to maintain compatibility with operational improvements. This commitment to ongoing development suggests a long-term vision for the technology.

The success of this integration will likely depend on the seamlessness of the data flow between the wave generator and the AI system. Further development could focus on refining the AI algorithms to provide even more personalized coaching feedback and optimizing wave generation based on individual surfer skill levels.

The partnership also raises questions about data privacy and security. While the system is designed to enhance the surfing experience, it’s vital to ensure that surfer data is handled responsibly and securely. Wavegarden and Surf Eye will need to address these concerns to maintain user trust and comply with relevant data protection regulations.

the integration of Surf Eye’s AI with Wavegarden’s technology represents a significant step forward in the evolution of wave pool technology. By combining video capture, operational controls, and data analysis, the system has the potential to transform the surfing experience and optimize the performance of wave lagoons worldwide.
