Women & Astronomy: Chile’s Copiapó Celebrates Skies & Science

Women & Astronomy: Chile’s Copiapó Celebrates Skies & Science

March 15, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

More than 40 women participated in “Un cielo de estrellas para la Mujer” (“A Sky of Stars for Women”), a pioneering astronomy initiative in Copiapó, Chile, designed to broaden access to science and celebrate the region’s exceptional night skies. The event, a collaboration between the Copiapó Municipality’s Department of Culture, Tourism and Heritage, the Copiapó Women’s Center, and the Andrómeda Observatory, took place throughout March in recognition of both Women’s History Month and the broader Month of Astronomy.

The initiative quickly reached capacity, demonstrating significant community interest in astronomy and the unique astronomical resources of the Atacama region. Copiapó Mayor Maglio Cicardini Neyra highlighted the event as part of a larger municipal strategy to develop the area as a destination for scientific tourism and education. He as well noted its relevance to the upcoming International Astrotourism Summit, which Copiapó will host in May.

Intergenerational Exploration at the Andrómeda Observatory

The core of “Un cielo de estrellas para la Mujer” took place at the Andrómeda Observatory, located in the El Palomar sector. Participants – including mothers, daughters, and grandmothers – received basic instruction in astronomical observation and used telescopes to view the night sky, guided by observatory specialists. The focus of the evening’s discussion, according to Andrómeda Observatory director Juan de la Rosa, was stellar evolution. “The idea was to explain stellar evolution and, at the same time, link this knowledge with reflections on women, approaching it from a scientific content,” de la Rosa explained. The event intentionally fostered connections between generations, with families and members of the Copiapó Women’s Center participating together.

The intergenerational aspect resonated with attendees. Emilia Hinostroza, a 13-year-classic recently relocated to Copiapó from Concepción, shared her enthusiasm. “I like to learn and understand everything. I found it a very entertaining activity. I was surprised to learn that Notice different types of stars and suns. Seeing through the telescope is very elegant and the skies here are very beautiful. I would like to learn much more about the subject,” she said.

The Copiapó Women’s Center also emphasized the innovative nature of the program. Claudia Rodríguez, the center’s program coordinator, noted, “It has been a very nice experience. We came as a human team with our families and It’s the first time we have carried out an activity for women linked to science, so it has been something very innovative.”

Atacama Skies and the Rise of Astrotourism

The success of this initiative underscores a growing trend: the development of astrotourism. The Atacama Desert in Chile is renowned for its exceptionally clear, dark skies, making it a prime location for astronomical observation. This is due to a combination of factors, including high altitude, low light pollution, and a stable atmosphere. The region already hosts several major astronomical observatories, including the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) (ALMA), and is increasingly attracting visitors interested in stargazing.

The Copiapó municipality’s strategy to promote its skies as a tourist destination aligns with a broader national effort to capitalize on Chile’s astronomical advantages. The International Astrotourism Summit, scheduled for May, is a key component of this effort. (Copiapo.cl) reports that the summit aims to position Chile as a leading destination for astrotourism, attracting both amateur and professional astronomers, as well as tourists seeking unique experiences.

Bridging Science and Community Engagement

Beyond the economic benefits of astrotourism, initiatives like “Un cielo de estrellas para la Mujer” highlight the importance of public engagement with science. By making astronomy accessible to a wider audience, particularly women, the program aims to foster a greater appreciation for scientific inquiry and inspire the next generation of scientists. The intergenerational aspect of the event is particularly noteworthy, as it encourages knowledge sharing and strengthens family bonds. The program’s success demonstrates a demand for inclusive science education and the potential for astronomy to serve as a bridge between scientific knowledge and community engagement.

The event also reflects a growing awareness of the demand to address gender disparities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. By specifically targeting women, the initiative seeks to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for women to pursue careers in science and technology. The Copiapó Women’s Center’s involvement underscores the importance of partnerships between municipal governments and community organizations in promoting gender equality.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Access and Continued Innovation

The Copiapó municipality plans to continue offering similar activities as part of its ongoing cultural programming. Information about upcoming events can be found on the municipality’s Facebook and Instagram pages (cultura.copiapo.cl) and through its WhatsApp channel. The success of “Un cielo de estrellas para la Mujer” suggests a model for other communities seeking to leverage their astronomical resources for educational and economic development. Further initiatives could include expanding the program to reach more remote communities, offering workshops on astrophotography, and developing educational materials for schools. The long-term goal is to establish Copiapó as a recognized center for astrotourism and scientific education, contributing to both the local economy and the advancement of astronomical knowledge.
