Xiaomi Reclaims Wearable Market Lead in 2025: Omdia Report

March 6, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Xiaomi has reclaimed the top spot in global wearable device sales for 2025, ending a five-year run where other manufacturers held the lead. The resurgence of the Chinese tech giant signals a shift in the competitive dynamics of the wearable market, with ecosystems becoming as essential as hardware specifications. Total global wearable shipments reached 200 million units in 2025, a 6% year-over-year increase, according to research firm Omdia.

Ecosystems Over Specs: The New Battleground

The competition in the wearable industry is no longer solely focused on boasting the best screen, the most sensors, or the longest battery life. Omdia Research Manager Cynthia Chen explains that the strength of a device’s ecosystem is now paramount. “Wearable devices aren’t about who has the best screen, the most sensors, or the longest battery life, but about the strength of the ecosystem,” Chen stated, as reported by Gizmochina. This means seamless integration between devices like smartphones, tablets, cars, and smart home systems is crucial for retaining users.

Xiaomi’s success is largely attributed to its broad product portfolio, particularly the affordable Mi Band series. Entry-level smartwatches also contributed to an increase in the company’s average selling price. Xiaomi’s “Human × Car × Home” strategy, which aims to connect wearable functionality with a wider range of devices, has proven effective in fostering user loyalty. This strategy echoes a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies are increasingly focused on building interconnected ecosystems to lock in customers.

Market Share and Vendor Performance in 2025

Omdia’s data reveals Xiaomi captured 18% of the global wearable market share in 2025, narrowly edging out Apple at 17% and Huawei at 16%. Apple continues to dominate the high-end segment, leveraging its strong brand recognition, deep integration with the iPhone, premium materials, and expanding health features. Samsung experienced the most dramatic growth, with a 74% increase in shipments to 4.9 million units, driven by affordable smart bands and premium watches. Garmin rounded out the top five with 1.8 million units shipped, a steady 10% year-over-year increase.

The global wearable band market saw a recovery in early 2025, growing 13% to 46.6 million units. Canalys research indicates Xiaomi’s shipments grew 44% annually in the first quarter of 2025, reaching 8.7 million units – marking their first leadership position since mid-2021. This growth was fueled by a smarter ecosystem strategy and updates to product lines, including the Redmi Band 5. Xiaomi’s HyperOS platform is also playing a key role in connecting various devices within a unified system.

Apple’s Position and Samsung’s Rebound

While Xiaomi surged ahead, Apple’s growth was more moderate, with a 5% increase in watch shipments to 7.6 million units in the first quarter of 2025, representing a 16% market share. This suggests Apple’s dominance in the premium segment remains strong, but the company is facing increased competition from Xiaomi and Samsung.

Samsung’s impressive 74% growth is particularly noteworthy. The company’s focus on affordable smart bands for price-sensitive markets, alongside its premium smartwatch offerings, appears to be paying off. This strategy allows Samsung to capture a wider range of consumers and compete effectively across different price points. The company’s rebound demonstrates the importance of diversifying product lines and catering to different market segments.

The Role of China and Shifting Market Dynamics

Interestingly, the initial Omdia report from January 2026, highlighted in Business Wire, noted that the global smartphone market grew by 2% in 2025, reaching 1.25 billion units. While not directly related to wearables, this overall growth in the consumer electronics market likely contributed to the positive performance of the wearable sector. The report also mentioned that Greater China experienced a marginal decline in smartphone shipments due to the phasing out of a national subsidy scheme, which could have indirectly impacted wearable sales in the region.

Looking Ahead: Continued Ecosystem Expansion and Feature Integration

The trend towards ecosystem integration is expected to continue shaping the wearable market in the coming years. Manufacturers will likely focus on developing more seamless connections between wearables and other devices, offering users a more unified and convenient experience. Further advancements in health and fitness tracking features are also anticipated, as companies strive to differentiate their products and attract health-conscious consumers. The success of Xiaomi, Apple, and Samsung demonstrates that a comprehensive ecosystem, coupled with innovative features and a diverse product portfolio, is essential for thriving in the increasingly competitive wearable market.

The focus will likely shift towards refining existing platforms like HyperOS and deepening integration with services like Apple Health. Further development of software and AI-powered features will be crucial for enhancing the value proposition of wearable devices and attracting new users. The ability to leverage data collected from wearables to provide personalized insights and recommendations will also be a key differentiator for manufacturers.

The market will also be watching for how companies address potential privacy concerns related to the increasing amount of personal data collected by wearable devices. Transparency and robust data security measures will be essential for building trust with consumers and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the wearable market.
