airBaltic Adds Third Repatriation Flight from Dubai to Riga Amid Middle East Tensions

airBaltic Adds Third Repatriation Flight from Dubai to Riga Amid Middle East Tensions

March 9, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor World

Riga is preparing for a third airBaltic repatriation flight from Dubai, scheduled to depart Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) at 19:20 local time on Saturday, March 7th. The move comes as regional instability continues to disrupt air travel and leaves hundreds of Latvian citizens seeking to return home. This latest flight follows two earlier evacuations organized on March 6th, with a technical stop in Heraklion, Greece, and underscores the Latvian government’s commitment to assisting its nationals in the Middle East.

Escalating Regional Tensions Drive Evacuations

The necessitate for these repatriation flights stems from a rapidly evolving security situation in the Middle East. While airspace over most of the region remains closed – with exceptions for Oman, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia (with interruptions) – limited flight operations are being permitted at Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports. These restrictions are a direct consequence of escalating tensions, including American-Israeli attacks on Iran and retaliatory missile strikes launched by Iran itself. Recent reports indicate an explosion occurred at Dubai International Airport, further complicating travel arrangements and prompting a temporary suspension of all aircraft movements for security reasons.

As of March 4th, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had registered 624 citizens in the consular registry as requiring assistance to leave the United Arab Emirates. Beyond the UAE, the ministry is also working to facilitate the departure of Latvian nationals from Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, coordinating with other European Union member states to explore available options. The current consular registry lists 812 nationals in the UAE, 26 in Israel, 14 in Oman, 28 in Qatar, 16 in Saudi Arabia, 8 in Kuwait (who have since traveled to Saudi Arabia), and 6 in Bahrain (also traveling to Saudi Arabia).

Navigating Limited Exit Routes

With widespread airspace closures, options for leaving the region are limited. AirBaltic’s repatriation flights represent a crucial lifeline for Latvian citizens. Yet, alternative routes are also being explored. Travelers can currently transit by land from Israel to Egypt via the Taba border crossing, connecting to flights to several European countries from Taba Airport. Similarly, land travel from Israel to Jordan is possible via the Aqaba border crossing, with Arkia airlines offering flights from Aqaba to Athens. There is also a possibility of limited flights resuming from Ben Gurion Airport to European cities over the weekend, operated by Israeli airlines.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly advises citizens in the region to closely monitor announcements from local official media regarding security updates and to adhere to the instructions of local authorities. In emergency situations, Latvian citizens can contact the 24-hour duty officer of the Consular Department at +371 26337711 or via email at [email protected].

airBaltic’s Response and Financial Considerations

airBaltic has been proactive in responding to the crisis, initially announcing the cancellation of flights to Dubai and Tel Aviv due to security concerns and airspace restrictions, effective until March 5th, 2026. The airline swiftly organized the first two repatriation flights on March 6th, each with a capacity of 145 passengers. The third flight, BT7756, departing March 7th, will operate from Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), a shift from the initial reports focusing on Dubai International Airport, which experienced temporary closure. airBaltic is offering flights from Dubai to Riga, with fares starting from €257, though these prices are subject to change.

Passengers utilizing the repatriation flights are required to pay a co-payment of 350 euros, as reported by Delfi. This cost-sharing measure likely reflects the extraordinary circumstances and the logistical challenges associated with organizing these emergency evacuations. The second repatriation flight, announced on March 5th, also carried this co-payment requirement.

The Broader Implications for Regional Air Travel

The current disruptions to air travel in the Middle East have far-reaching consequences beyond the immediate evacuation of citizens. The closure of airspace significantly impacts global flight routes, forcing airlines to reroute flights and potentially increasing travel times and costs. The situation also raises concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to geopolitical instability and the need for robust contingency planning. The ongoing conflict and heightened tensions underscore the interconnectedness of global air travel and the potential for regional crises to have cascading effects worldwide.

The Latvian government’s response, coordinated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and executed by airBaltic, highlights the importance of proactive consular assistance and the role of national airlines in safeguarding the interests of their citizens abroad. The cooperation with other EU member states further demonstrates the collective approach to crisis management within the European Union.

Looking ahead, the situation remains fluid and dependent on the evolution of the security landscape in the Middle East. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor developments closely and will provide updates and guidance to Latvian citizens in the region. Travelers are urged to remain vigilant, stay informed, and follow the instructions of local authorities. The resumption of normal flight operations will hinge on a de-escalation of tensions and the restoration of safe airspace conditions.
