Nowruz 2024: Iranian Australians Mark New Year Amidst Iran Conflict Concerns

Nowruz 2024: Iranian Australians Mark New Year Amidst Iran Conflict Concerns

March 27, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor World

The ancient Persian Novel Year, Nowruz, traditionally a time for familial gatherings and hopeful renewal, is being observed with a heavy heart by many Iranian Australians this year. For Nasrin Pour, a resident of Adelong, New South Wales, the joy of Nowruz is muted by the inability to connect with family remaining in Iran amidst ongoing conflict. “I can’t even ring my family and craft sure they’re OK, let alone talk to them about Nowruz, and congratulate them for the new year,” she said, reflecting a sentiment shared by many within the diaspora.

Nowruz, meaning “new day,” marks the spring equinox and is a celebration deeply rooted in Iranian culture, observed not only in Iran but as well across Afghanistan, Albania, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and by diaspora communities worldwide. The festival, which began on March 21st, typically spans two weeks and is characterized by traditions like the “haft seen”—a table setting of seven symbolic items, each starting with the letter ‘S’ in Farsi, representing elements of nature and hopes for the year ahead. As detailed by Wikipedia, Nowruz has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016, recognizing its cultural significance.

A Shadow Cast by Conflict

This year’s celebrations are significantly impacted by escalating tensions and attacks in the Middle East. Reports from CNN indicate a pervasive sense of fear and hopelessness among Iranians, with many expressing a lack of enthusiasm for festivities. The ongoing conflict, involving attacks from the US and Israel, has left thousands dead and wounded, and has severely damaged infrastructure within the country. Nazanin, a Tehran resident quoted by CNN, poignantly described a feeling of suspended time, where traditional markers like Nowruz hold little meaning amidst the uncertainty.

The disruption extends beyond physical safety. Ms. Pour’s experience highlights the communication challenges faced by Iranian Australians attempting to reach loved ones. “This year feels different because there’s no internet in Iran and all the networks are shut down,” she explained. This communication blackout adds to the anxiety and isolation felt by those separated from their families.

Maintaining Tradition Amidst Distance

Despite the challenges, many Iranian Australians are determined to uphold Nowruz traditions. Leila Davandeh, who has hosted Nowruz events in Wagga Wagga, emphasizes the festival’s enduring significance. “This year will be a bit different. We are definitely still celebrating because this is a celebration that is more than 2,000 years old,” she stated. The “haft seen” table, for example, remains a central element, with items like apples symbolizing beauty and love, and garlic representing health and medicine. Ms. Davandeh explained that the tradition is about “refreshing everything” – buying new clothes, thoroughly cleaning homes – symbolizing a fresh start.

For those living in areas with smaller Iranian communities, like Ms. Pour in Adelong, finding ways to connect with others becomes particularly important. She often travels to larger cities like Sydney and Melbourne to participate in community events. The absence of a local Iranian community can be isolating, especially during significant celebrations, but Ms. Davandeh has been working to expand Nowruz celebrations in the regional community of Wagga Wagga, hosting events like Persian poetry readings, egg painting workshops, and concerts featuring classical Persian ensembles.

Expanding Celebrations and Building Community

The scale of Nowruz events in Wagga Wagga has grown significantly this year, with Ms. Davandeh noting it was the largest she had seen since moving to the region in 2017. This expansion reflects a broader effort to create a sense of belonging and maintain cultural identity for the Iranian diaspora. These events provide a space for Iranians to come together, share traditions, and support one another during a difficult time.

The importance of community building is further underscored by the experiences of Iranian Australians who have found new ways to celebrate Nowruz while adapting to life in Australia. Ms. Davandeh believes that celebrating traditions and festivals is crucial for maintaining a sense of identity, particularly for those living far from their homeland.

Hope for a Peaceful Future

Beyond the cultural significance, Nowruz carries a deeper meaning for many Iranian Australians this year – a hope for a peaceful future for Iran. Ms. Davandeh expressed a desire for a “free Iran,” stating, “With what’s happening in Iran right now, we are hoping this will be a new future for our country… We haven’t had that for 47 years, and we are hoping the new year will be a new Iran as well.” This sentiment reflects a longing for political change and an end to the conflict that is casting a shadow over the new year celebrations.

The situation remains fluid, and the extent of the conflict’s impact on Iran is still unfolding. While the immediate future remains uncertain, the resilience of the Iranian community, both in Iran and abroad, is evident in their determination to preserve their traditions and maintain hope for a brighter future. The ongoing conflict has created significant communication challenges, as highlighted by Ms. Pour’s inability to contact her family, and the reported internet shutdowns within Iran. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing US-Israeli attacks, as reported by CNN, which have resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life.

Navigating the Diplomatic Landscape

The current crisis is rooted in a complex web of geopolitical tensions. The attacks on Iran are reportedly in response to perceived threats and regional destabilization. However, the situation is further complicated by the involvement of multiple actors and the potential for escalation. As reported by the ABC, the conflict is reshaping the way Iranian Australians observe Nowruz, highlighting the deep connection between the diaspora and the events unfolding in their homeland. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with calls for de-escalation and a return to diplomatic negotiations. The role of international organizations, such as the United Nations, will be crucial in mediating a peaceful resolution.

Looking ahead, the immediate priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians in Iran and the region. Efforts to restore communication channels and provide humanitarian assistance are also critical. The long-term outlook will depend on the willingness of all parties to engage in constructive dialogue and address the underlying causes of the conflict. The situation underscores the importance of international cooperation and a commitment to peaceful conflict resolution.
