2026 Oscars Makeup: Ballet Slipper Lips & Spring Beauty Trends

2026 Oscars Makeup: Ballet Slipper Lips & Spring Beauty Trends

March 16, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The soft, romantic aesthetic of “ballet slipper lips” has emerged as the defining makeup trend of the spring season, dominating looks on the 2026 Oscars red carpet and signaling a shift away from bolder, more dramatic lip colors. The gaze, reminiscent of pink satin and evoking a sense of nostalgia, is proving surprisingly versatile for modern interpretations.

The trend’s prominence at the Academy Awards, marking the close of awards season, underscores its transition from a niche aesthetic to a mainstream beauty choice. Attendees embraced pastel tones across both fashion and makeup, with ballet slipper lips offering a softer alternative to previously popular muted trends like “cloud lips.” The key to the look lies in a cool-toned pink base, often finished with a frosted or glossy sheen – a subtle nod to the early 2000s beauty styles that are currently experiencing a revival.

While the core concept remains consistent, makeup artists are demonstrating a range of approaches to modernize the ballet slipper lip for 2026. Glossy finishes are replacing the heavier shimmer associated with Y2K aesthetics and the technique is frequently being combined with the “blurred lip” trend, a method favored for its longevity and ability to achieve a desired shade. Celebrity makeup artist Allan Avendaño, a member of the L’Oréal Paris League of Experts, explained to Glamour that filling in the entire lip with liner before applying color helps the lipstick last longer and ensures the desired hue is achieved.

Several products are being highlighted as key components for achieving the look. L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Satin Lipstick in Ballerina Shoes, Dior Addict Lip Glow Balm, and Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss are all gaining traction as proceed-to choices. E.l.f. Glow Reviver Plumping Lip Oil in Piggy Bank offers a more affordable option. These products cater to a range of preferences, from classic satin finishes to hydrating, plumping glosses.

The trend was particularly visible on the March 15th Oscars red carpet. Actress McKenna Grace showcased a striking example of the look, complementing her ensemble with a soft, pink lip. Notably, Misty Copeland, the American ballet dancer, also embraced the aesthetic, with makeup artist Mali Thomas Boykin creating a “baby ballerina pink” look using MERIT Beauty products. Boykin utilized The Uniform Tinted SPF for a luminous base, Flush Balm in Stockholm for cheeks, and Solo Shadow Sheen in Glace for a subtle sparkle on the eyes, finishing with Lip Blush in Andie and Signature Lip Liner in Sportif for a pillowy, blurred effect.

Copeland’s choice held additional significance, as her makeup appeared to subtly reference her profession and potentially serve as a statement. The look was also mirrored by Lindsay Lohan on the cover of Vogue Arabia, further cementing the popularity of the Andie and Sportif lip combination as the “pinky-brown lip of the moment.”

The rise of ballet slipper lips isn’t simply about a color. it represents a broader shift in makeup preferences. After years of bolder, more sculpted looks, there’s a growing appetite for softer, more natural aesthetics. This trend aligns with a desire for understated elegance and a return to classic beauty principles. The look’s adaptability – its ability to be customized with different finishes and techniques – ensures its staying power throughout the spring and beyond.

The trend’s appeal also lies in its accessibility. Unlike some high-fashion makeup looks that require specialized skills and products, ballet slipper lips can be easily achieved with readily available items. This ease of replication contributes to its widespread adoption and reinforces its position as a key beauty trend for 2026.

The emphasis on pastel tones and soft-focus effects suggests a broader cultural desire for gentler, more optimistic aesthetics. As the industry transitions from winter to spring, the ballet slipper lip embodies this shift, offering a fresh and approachable look that resonates with a wide audience. The trend’s success at the Oscars, combined with its adoption by celebrities and influencers, solidifies its status as a must-attempt look for the season.
