Aston Martin & Honda F1: Alonso’s Concerns, Reliability Issues & Suzuka Prep | 2024 Updates

Aston Martin & Honda F1: Alonso’s Concerns, Reliability Issues & Suzuka Prep | 2024 Updates

March 25, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Suzuka, Japan – Aston Martin’s ambitious partnership with Honda is facing a turbulent start, with the team languishing at the bottom of the Formula One World Championship after just two races. The issues plaguing the team extend beyond simple teething problems, with drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll experiencing significant reliability concerns and performance deficits.

The Japanese Grand Prix, a home race for Honda held at the iconic Suzuka circuit, arrives at a critical juncture. While traditionally a celebratory event for the manufacturer, this year’s race is overshadowed by the struggles of their latest alliance with Aston Martin. Honda engineers are working tirelessly to address a severe vibration issue originating from the power unit, specifically impacting the battery and causing discomfort – and potential nerve damage – for the drivers.

Alonso, a two-time world champion, retired from both the Australian and Chinese Grand Prix, while teammate Stroll also retired in China and finished a distant last in Melbourne, 15 laps behind the race winner. The severity of the vibration prompted Adrian Newey, Aston Martin’s team principal, to express concerns about the potential for permanent nerve damage to the drivers after as little as 25 laps of running. Alonso himself admitted to struggling to feel his hands and feet during the Chinese Grand Prix, ultimately leading to his retirement after 32 laps.

“On lap 20 to 35 I was struggling a bit to feel my hands and my feet,” Alonso stated after the race in China. “We were one lap behind, we were last and there was probably no point to keep going.”

The root of the problem appears to lie with the battery, a critical component of the hybrid engine system. Engineers are attempting to isolate the battery from the vibrations, but the issue continues to ripple through the car, affecting overall performance and driver comfort. Beyond the vibrations, Honda’s power unit is currently underperforming in both the internal combustion engine and electrical systems, hindering its ability to fully recover and deploy energy.

Shintaro Orihara, Honda’s trackside general manager and chief engineer, acknowledged the challenges. “In China, we made some progress in terms of battery reliability thanks to a reduction in the vibration affecting the systems, but we must find more solutions to establish the cause of the vibrations affecting the drivers,” Orihara said. “We have also focused our efforts in the gap between China and Japan to continue to improve our reliability, but still our performance is not where we wish it to be, especially regarding energy management.”

Orihara emphasized the team’s preparation for the unique demands of the Suzuka circuit. “Suzuka Circuit is a tough track for this, so we have been using the learnings from Australia and China to prepare better for the Japanese Grand Prix. We are not at the level where we wanted to be going into this weekend, but we will keep working hard to maximise our package. We are looking forward to seeing the home crowd and the Honda fans. I want them to see that we have made some progress since Bahrain [testing].”

This difficult start marks the second time Alonso has experienced a challenging partnership with Honda in Formula One. His previous stint with the Japanese manufacturer at McLaren between 2015 and 2017 was fraught with reliability issues and performance shortcomings, famously prompting the frustrated Spaniard to label the McLaren-Honda power unit a “GP2 engine” during the 2015 Japanese Grand Prix. Despite the past difficulties, Alonso maintains faith in Honda’s ability to resolve the current issues, though he admits he doesn’t know how long that process will take.

The timing of these struggles is particularly unfortunate for Aston Martin, as they have embarked on a new factory partnership with Honda, hoping to replicate the success Honda enjoyed with Red Bull Racing from 2021-2024, where they secured four drivers’ titles and two constructors’ championships. The team is currently last in the world championship standings, a stark contrast to their ambitions and the significant investment made in the partnership.

Adding to the complexity, Aston Martin’s car design was initiated late in 2023, after Adrian Newey joined the team in March. While Newey is confident the chassis can turn into competitive later in the season, the initial delay has contributed to the current performance gap. Jak Crawford, the team’s reserve driver, is scheduled to participate in first practice on Friday as part of the team’s mandated rookie sessions.

Alonso, whose contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of the 2026 season, has yet to publicly commit to remaining with the team beyond that point. The coming races will be crucial in determining not only the success of the Aston Martin-Honda partnership but also Alonso’s future in Formula One.
