Hong Kong Racing Incident Report – Key Findings & Stewards’ Decisions

Hong Kong Racing Incident Report – Key Findings & Stewards’ Decisions

March 23, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Sha Tin Racecourse hosted the Luger Handicap on March 22, 2026, a race marred by several incidents of contact and interference, leading to multiple inquiries and reprimands for jockeys. The race, officially Race 1, saw a number of runners experiencing difficulties throughout the event, impacting their performance and requiring post-race veterinary examinations.

Contact and Interference Mark Race

The most notable incident involved Robot Star (K559), ridden by Zac Purton, and Forza Toro (K355), with Hong Kong-based jockey Harry Bowman. Leaving the 1100-meter mark, the two horses made contact as both runners shifted ground slightly. Shortly after, Robot Star began to race keenly and was checked when crowded between Lucky Secret, which gave ground, and Winning Diamond (M L Yeung), who shifted out, further compounding the issue. Bowman was subsequently reprimanded for not leaving sufficient racing room to runners to his inside.

Further complicating matters, Winning Diamond’s jockey, M L Yeung, was advised to exercise more care following the incident. Near the 50-meter mark, Robot Star was again checked even as attempting to avoid Mega Mastermind (B Avdulla), which shifted out abruptly before being corrected by its rider. Avdulla faced a severe reprimand, with officials stating he should have stopped riding and straightened his mount sooner in similar circumstances.

Multiple Runners Involved in Incidents

The interference wasn’t limited to Robot Star. Bucephalus (K096), ridden by K C Leung, bumped at the start and also made contact with Matsu Victor during the early stages of the race. Leung, while stating his mount gave ground noticeably near the 200-meter mark, could offer no specific excuse for the horse’s performance. A post-race veterinary inspection revealed no significant findings.

Forza Toro also experienced a difficult start, jumping only fairly and being crowded by Winning Diamond, which had shifted out. The horse raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. The Absolute (H438), ridden by L Ferraris, shifted out on jumping and was bumped, while Grand Turbo (L138), with R Kingscote aboard, was bumped by The Absolute and subsequently made contact with Fighting Machine (J015).

Grand Turbo also faced a checking incident near the 800-meter mark, being forced to avoid Lucky Secret when that runner gave ground. Lucky Secret (L073), ridden by E C W Wong, was also steadied leaving the 1100-meter mark due to being crowded between Winning Diamond and Matsu Victor, with jockey C Y Ho advised to exercise more care.

Further Checks and Blunders

The challenges continued for several other horses. Multisupersstar (L163), ridden by A Badel, blundered near the 350-meter mark and lay in approaching the 300-meter mark, experiencing difficulty obtaining clear running when positioned close to Robot Star. Circuit Marshal (K526), with C L Chau riding, was steadied leaving the 800-meter mark to avoid Grand Turbo when that runner was checked.

Mega Mastermind’s abrupt shift near the finish resulted in a warning being placed on the horse’s racing manners. Matsu Victor (H472) also had difficulty obtaining clear running over the concluding stages when positioned close to Robot Star, which was checked during the same incident. Fighting Machine (J015), ridden by K Teetan, jumped awkwardly and became unbalanced shortly after the start when bumped by Grand Turbo.

Jockey Explanations and Veterinary Checks

Several jockeys offered explanations for their horses’ performances. M L Yeung stated he was instructed to settle Winning Diamond where comfortable and that the horse was able to maintain an on-pace position due to the slightly slower-than-standard early pace. D B McMonagle, riding Glorious Success (K062), noted that his mount finished in a one-paced manner, struggling to develop up ground from the back of the field, attributing it to the early pace. K C Leung, on Bucephalus, could offer no specific excuse for his horse’s performance despite it giving ground near the 200-meter mark.

Post-race veterinary inspections were conducted on Bucephalus, Lucky Secret, Glorious Success, and Matsu Victor, but no significant findings were reported in any case. Robot Star, Mega Mastermind, and Circuit Marshal were all sent for sampling post-race, indicating potential further scrutiny of their performances.

The Luger Handicap proved to be a chaotic race, with a series of incidents impacting multiple runners and leading to several inquiries and reprimands. The race highlights the challenges of navigating a crowded field and the importance of maintaining control and awareness throughout the event. The post-race analysis and veterinary checks will be crucial in determining the full extent of the impact on the horses involved.
