Man Utd Transfer News: Malacia, Casemiro, Mount & Ugarte – Summer Plans Revealed

Man Utd Transfer News: Malacia, Casemiro, Mount & Ugarte – Summer Plans Revealed

March 19, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Manchester United are undergoing a significant reshaping of their squad ahead of next season, with definitive decisions made regarding the futures of several players. According to reports, the club has resolved whether to retain or sell Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount.

The upcoming summer transfer window is anticipated to be a busy period for the Red Devils, with plans to bring in reinforcements in multiple positions – two central midfielders, a left-back, a left winger, and potentially a new striker depending on the future of Joshua Zirkzee. Alongside potential arrivals, a number of departures are also expected, either through expiring contracts or permanent transfers.

The quartet of Malacia, Casemiro, Ugarte, and Mount have been the subject of speculation, with their positions at Old Trafford uncertain. However, clarity has now emerged, revealing the club’s intentions for each player.

Malacia and Casemiro are both out of contract this summer, leading to questions about their continued involvement with the club. Although there had been calls from fans for Casemiro to be offered a short-term extension following a recent strong performance, those hopes have been dashed. According to Manchester Evening News journalist Tyrone Marshall, the club has firmly decided against offering the veteran midfielder a new deal.

Marshall explained, “We had quite a few questions on Casemiro after his latest star turn on Sunday, which ended with the Old Trafford crowd asking him to do one more year. This is the most succinct of those questions, and the most succinct answer is no. I obtain the impression Casemiro would be willing to stay, depending on the contract offer, but United have made the decision not to offer him a new deal. That call was made early in the season and only made public in January. United have no plans to U-turn and offer a new deal now.” This decision signals a clear shift in midfield strategy for United, despite the Brazilian’s willingness to remain at the club.

Turning to the other players under review, Malacia’s situation appears equally definitive. With his contract expiring, he will be allowed to leave on a free transfer. Marshall stated, “His days are numbered, however, and he won’t be sold as he is out of contract in the summer, so he will leave on a free transfer.” This suggests that the left-back has not done enough to earn a new contract, and the club will not receive a transfer fee for his departure.

Ugarte’s future at United also looks bleak. Having failed to establish himself as a regular starter since the team’s shift to a 4-2-3-1 formation, he is considered surplus to requirements. Marshall noted, “Ugarte is on the list of players likely to be sold as well. He hasn’t started a game since the switch to 4-2-3-1 and doesn’t have the profile to play in that system for United. His passing isn’t good enough and he hasn’t made a strong enough case over the last two years to remain at the club.” This indicates that the club is seeking midfielders with a different skillset to fit their tactical approach.

Perhaps the most surprising revelation concerns Mason Mount. Despite being linked with a potential exit, Marshall suggests that the club intends to retain the former Chelsea player. “I wouldn’t expect him to be sold at all,” he stated. “ [Michael] Carrick likes him and he is a coach’s dream. He was having a good season until his latest injury, although there is a question of where his role is since the shift in formation. He is a valuable squad player, however, and offers enough versatility to get his share of games next season if United are back in the Champions League and facing a more demanding schedule.” This suggests that Mount’s versatility and function ethic are highly valued by the coaching staff, despite questions about his optimal position within the team.

The decisions regarding these four players represent a significant step in Manchester United’s squad overhaul. While the departure of Casemiro marks the end of an era, the club appears to be focused on building a younger, more dynamic midfield. The exits of Malacia and Ugarte will free up space in the squad, while the retention of Mount provides valuable depth and tactical flexibility.

Elsewhere, reports indicate that Jadon Sancho is nearing a return to Borussia Dortmund, with the German club’s hierarchy now supportive of the transfer. This move could provide Sancho with a fresh start and an opportunity to rediscover his form.
