Sporting CP Elections: Sá vs Varandas – Live Updates & Results
Lisbon played host to a pivotal day for Sporting CP on , as members cast their votes to determine the club’s next president. The election, held at the Pavilhão João Rocha, saw a steady stream of supporters throughout the day, with a brief surge in attendance during the afternoon resulting in a queue of approximately 20 meters that quickly dissipated.
By 8:30 PM local time, a total of 18,268 members had participated in the election, according to the club. The voting process itself was described as swift and efficient, with members reportedly taking only minutes to complete their electronic ballots.
The race for the presidency pits incumbent Frederico Varandas against challenger Bruno Sá. Varandas, who assumed the role in 2018 following a period of turbulence for the club, is seeking a third term, emphasizing stability and recent successes. Sá, a local entrepreneur, is campaigning on a platform of increased member involvement and a return to democratic principles within the organization.
Bruno Sá, owner of the restaurant ‘Cantinho do Sá’ near the Estádio José Alvalade, has positioned himself as a voice for change, accusing the current administration of alienation and financial mismanagement. He expressed concerns about growing debt and a lack of focus on the club’s long-term financial sustainability, suggesting the current leadership operates more for “clients” than for the benefit of the members.
Frederico Varandas, meanwhile, is running on a record of achievement. He highlighted the club’s recent trophy haul – including three league championships, a Super Cup, two Portuguese Cups, and three League Cups – and the stabilization of Sporting’s finances during his tenure. He urged members to vote in large numbers, emphasizing the importance of continued progress and maintaining Sporting’s position as a leading sporting power in Portugal.
The atmosphere surrounding the election comes after a challenging week for the club on the pitch. Sporting suffered a 3-0 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Bodo/Glimt, and their domestic league match against Tondela was postponed. Despite these setbacks, both candidates sought to rally the supporters and emphasize the importance of their participation in shaping the club’s future.
João Palma, President of the General Assembly, reported that approximately 5,600 members had voted by 2:00 PM, a number that nearly doubled to around 10,000 by 6:00 PM. This figure includes the 6,233 votes cast by mail. Whereas Palma acknowledged that these numbers may fall short of the record-breaking turnout of 22,510 in 2018, he expressed confidence that the final tally would be substantial.
Palma noted the particularly high engagement during the 2018 election, attributing it to a period of significant crisis and instability within the club. He encouraged supporters to come out and vote, emphasizing that it was their responsibility to care for the club and shape its direction.
A total of 75,817 members were eligible to vote, with each member’s voting power determined by their length of membership. The Pavilhão João Rocha, inaugurated in , served as the sole location for in-person voting, with terminals remaining open until 8:00 PM to accommodate those who arrived on time.
The Pavilhão João Rocha itself is a modern, multi-sport arena with a capacity of 3,000, serving as the home venue for Sporting CP’s basketball, futsal, handball, roller hockey, and volleyball teams. The construction of the arena, which cost €9.621.557, was funded through the “Missão Pavilhão” project, a fundraising initiative aimed at mobilizing the club’s supporters. The facility boasts features such as automatic scoreboards for roller hockey and an advanced video and multimedia system.
As the votes are tallied, the outcome of this election will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future of Sporting CP, a club steeped in history and tradition. The choice between continuity under Varandas and a new direction with Sá rests with the club’s dedicated membership.
