Sony Shuts Down Dark Outlaw Games Studio Led by Call of Duty Veteran

March 24, 2026 Sarah Wu - Tech Editor Tech and Science

Sony has shuttered Dark Outlaw Games, a first-party studio established in March 2025 and led by veteran Call of Duty developer Jason Blundell. The closure, reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, marks another shift in Sony’s strategy regarding internal game development and live-service ambitions. The studio was still in the early stages of its first project when the decision was made, and the exact number of employees affected remains undisclosed.

A Pattern of Restructuring at PlayStation

This isn’t the first time a collaboration between Blundell and Sony Interactive Entertainment has ended prematurely. Prior to joining Sony as an internal employee, Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, an independent studio partnered with Sony to develop a new intellectual property. He departed Deviation Games in September 2022, and the studio was ultimately closed in March 2024. Kotaku details how the initial budget for Deviation Games’ project exceeded $200 million before Sony pulled funding due to a troubled development cycle.

Blundell’s return to Sony in December 2023, and the subsequent formation of Dark Outlaw Games in March 2025, appeared to signal a renewed commitment. Still, the studio’s lifespan was brief, concluding before it could publicly announce any titles. This closure adds to a growing list of studio shutdowns within the PlayStation ecosystem, including Bluepoint Games in February and Firewalk Studios in October 2024 following the failure of their multiplayer shooter, Concord. Naughty Dog also abandoned a standalone multiplayer version of The Last of Us in December 2023.

The Shift Away From Live-Service Games

The repeated closures suggest a broader recalibration within Sony PlayStation, moving away from an earlier investment in online, live-service multiplayer games. Sony’s previous strategy involved building out a portfolio of studios capable of delivering ongoing, revenue-generating titles. However, the challenges faced by Deviation Games, Firewalk Studios, and the difficulties in launching successful live-service experiences appear to have prompted a reassessment. The industry has seen several high-profile live-service games struggle to gain traction, highlighting the inherent risks and complexities of this model.

Jason Blundell’s expertise lies in the Call of Duty franchise, particularly the Zombies mode. His work on titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 established him as a key figure in the development of cooperative multiplayer experiences. The expectation was that Dark Outlaw Games would leverage this experience to create a similar offering for PlayStation. However, the studio’s failure to announce a project before its closure leaves the specifics of its intended direction unknown.

Financial Pressures and Strategic Realignment

The decision to close Dark Outlaw Games is reportedly part of wider cuts to staff at PlayStation, specifically within mobile development. GameSpot reports that these cuts signal a strategic realignment, potentially driven by financial pressures and a need to streamline operations. The gaming industry as a whole has experienced a wave of layoffs in recent months, reflecting a challenging economic climate and shifting consumer preferences.

The closure of these studios also raises questions about Sony’s acquisition strategy. While acquiring talented developers and studios can provide a competitive advantage, integrating them effectively and delivering successful projects requires careful planning and execution. The recent string of closures suggests that Sony may be re-evaluating its approach to acquisitions, focusing on studios with a clearer path to profitability and a stronger alignment with its overall strategic goals.

The Challenges of First-Party Development

Maintaining a robust portfolio of first-party studios is crucial for console manufacturers like Sony. These studios provide exclusive content that drives hardware sales and differentiates the platform from competitors. However, first-party development is also expensive and carries significant risk. Projects can be canceled, budgets can overrun, and studios can struggle to deliver on expectations. The recent closures at Sony highlight the inherent challenges of managing a large and diverse portfolio of internal development teams.

The situation at Sony also reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry towards consolidation and a focus on established franchises. Smaller, independent studios often struggle to compete with the resources and marketing power of larger companies. The closure of Deviation Games and Dark Outlaw Games underscores the difficulties faced by studios attempting to create new intellectual property in a highly competitive market.

What comes next for Sony remains to be seen. The company will likely continue to refine its strategy, focusing on core franchises and streamlining its internal development operations. The fate of the employees affected by these closures is also uncertain, although Sony has indicated that it will provide support to those impacted. The industry will be watching closely to see how Sony navigates these challenges and positions itself for the future of gaming.
